FAMILY MATTERS

While brainstorming ideas for this article, I was inspired by both literary and cinematic sources (so-called “family movies”). I was particularly interested in helping students put themselves in their parents’ shoes, and in encouraging them to appreciate more the things they often take for granted.

1.Remember an object that you associate with a particular family member. It might be a pair of glasses, a dress, a perfume, anything that calls up that person for you. Talk about this object and, through your description of this person’s use of it, create a portrait of his or her character.

2.Describe in a gentle, humourous vein the talents that your family member has. For inspiration I refer you to a hilarious poem by Edgar Guest called Father. Then change the tone and write in a serious vein about the things you admire this person for.

3.Brainstorm the list of traits that you have inherited from one or both of your parents for which you are glad or feel grateful.

4.Write about a gift your family, or someone in it, gave you. It might be an actual gift or a more intangible one. Describe it and explain why it’s precious to you.

5.Children often complain that they don’t get along with their parents. Let’s try and bridge the generation gap. Project yourself into the future (as in the film 13 Going On 30). What sort of a parent will you be? Write a set of rules for your child to follow. These can range from some practical tips to life philosophy. You may be surprised to discover that some rules you protest against now, as a child, will feature on this list you compose as a would-be parent.

6.In the 2003 film Freaky Friday mother and daughter switch bodies, and this helps them gain respect for each other’s point of view. Suppose you were to do the same. Imagine your mother/father swapping places with you and living one day inside your body. Describe this day as seen through your parent’s eyes. Also, put yourself in their place, and describe their day as perceived by you.

7.“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways” is a famous poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. What if we changed the addressee of this romantic poem and professed our love for our parents? Name the things you love about your parents. These can be some seemingly insignificant things, like the way your mother tucks you in before you go to sleep, or some major things that have shaped you as a person.

I’d like to conclude by quoting Mary Schmich, the journalist who wrote the popular “Wear Sunscreen” speech, in which she addresses the class of ‘99 and dispenses her advice. She says, “Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good.” I hope these exercises have made you take a closer look at your nearest and dearest and promoted your understanding and appreciation of them.

CREATIVE WRITING

FATHER

By Edgar Guest

My father knows the proper way The nation should be run;

He tells us children every day Just what should now be done.

He knows the way to fix the trusts, He has a simple plan;

But if the furnace needs repairs, We have to hire a man.

My father, in a day or two Could land big thieves in jail;

There’s nothing that he cannot do, He knows no word like “fail.”

“Our confidence” he would restore, Of that there is no doubt;

But if there is a chair to mend, We have to send it out.

All public questions that arise, He settles on the spot;

He waits not till the tumult dies, But grabs it while it’s hot.

In matters of finance he can Tell Congress what to do;

But, O, he finds it hard to meet His bills as they fall due.

It almost makes him sick to read The things law-makers say;

Why, father’s just the man they need, He never goes astray.

All wars he’d very quickly end, As fast as I can write it;

But when a neighbor starts a fuss, ‘Tis mother has to fight it.

In conversation father can

Do many wondrous things; He’s built upon a wiser plan

Than presidents or kings.

He knows the ins and outs of each And every deep transaction;

We look to him for theories, But look to ma for action.

14 “MY FAMILY TREE”

January 2013

И хотя проект называется “My Family Tree”, пo сути это речевые высказывания по теме “My Biography”.

Animals, Pets, Food, TV, Sport, Seasons, Books, Numbers, Family, Months, Dates, School.

Всвоих высказываниях учащиеся используют следующие грамматические явления: to be, Pronouns, Article, Nouns, Plurals, like/enjoy/hate + V+ing, Prepositions of time, Simple Present, Simple Past, Simple Future, Present Progressive, to be going to V+ing.

I.ПОДГОТОВКА ПРОЕКТА

Pets, Sport, TV, Seasons, Months, Books, School, Food.

1. There are a lot of hobbies. Some people like playing sports, others enjoy reading books. What do your classmates like doing? Ask them about their hobbies. Summarize the information in the chart.

Do you like watching TV?

Yes, I do. / No, I don’t

What is your hobby?

My hobby is growing roses.

Present Simple.

2. You know about your friends’ hobbies. And what do his parents/grandparents, sister, brother, aunt/uncle enjoy doing? What do they hate doing?

“Family”, “Hobby”.)

3.Do you like animals? Do you have any pets at home? What pets did your parents have in their childhood? Imagine that you can have any pet you like. What pet would it be? Explain why you would like it?

4.When is your birthday? When were you born? Ask your classmates about their date of birth. Who is the oldest/the youngest person in your class?

5.Ask your classmates when their grandparents were born. Whose grandparents are the oldest?

6.What is your favourite season? Why do you like it? When are you going to visit your grandparents? Where will you go in summer? Simple Future, Present Progressive, to be going to.)

My family is friendly. I love my parents and they love me. We are a happy family.

III.
