§7 The suppositional mood and subjunctive I in subordinate clauses

§7.1 Subject clauses

1. The present tense of the Suppositional Mood or Subjunctive I is used in subject clauses after the principal clause beginning with it’s necessary, it’s important, it’s desirable, it’s advisable, it’s demanded, it’s recommended, it’s obligatory; it’s suggested, it’s requested, etc. The Past tense is not used because suggestion, advice, recommendation as a rule refer to the future.

e.g. It is necessary that you (should) go to the hospital.

It was imperative that she (should) be present at the conference.

It will be arranged that you (should) get everything necessary.

2. Both tenses of the Suppositional Mood can be used after the principal clause beginning with it’s natural, it’s surprising, it’s strange, it’s curious, it’s odd, it’s doubtful, it’s impossible, it’s unpleasant, it’s understandable, it’s a pity, it’s a shame, etc. Present Suppositional Mood shows simultaneousness, Past Suppositional Mood shows priority.

e.g. It’s surprising that she should be in love with him.

It’s strange that she should still be studying at school.

It’s surprising that she should have married him.

Ex. 137. Comment on the use of the Subjunctive Mood.

1. It's absolutely necessary that I should see them before you do. 2. It's vitally important that the child should have all the care he needs. 3. It was necessary that somebody should sit up with the child for a couple of hours. 6. It will be advisable that you should keep me in touch with your whereabouts in future. 7.
