Monument to taras shevchenko
A small park in front of the University, where the Shevchenko Boulevard, Repin, Tolstoy and Volodymyrska Streets converge, has been named after the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko.
In the centre of the park on a small green mound surrounded by granite steps there is a monument to the poet. Due to the hostile attitude of the tsarist government to Shevchenko's work no honours could be conferred on the poet in pre-revolutionary Russia.
The first monuments to the poet were erected in Moscow and Leningrad in November 1918. Two monuments were built in Kyiv in 1919 and 1920. Both of them were destroyed during the Civil War by the troops of General Denikin and the White Poles.
On March 6, 1939 on the 125th anniversary of the poet’s birth a new monument was created in front of the University on the site of the pre-revo lutionary monument to the Russian Tsar Mykolay I.
Nearly 200 000 people attended the ceremony of unveiling the monument, a bronze 6,45-metre high figure of the poet, by sculptor Matvei Manizer. The poet seems to be lost in deep meditation; his concentrated look shows inner power and courage. Its rectangular 7- metre-high pedestal of red granite is inscribed with the following verse from Shevchenko’s Testament:
And in the great new family,
The family of the free.
With softly spoken, kindly word
Remember also me.
