XI. Write a resume of the text given below:
Despite the increased role of nonprice factors in the modern marketing process, price remains an important element in the marketing mix. There are many internal and external factors to consider when setting prices.
One important internal factor, the pricing strategy, is largely determined by the company’s marketing objectives. Pricing objectives often include survival, current profit maximization, market-share leadership, and product-quality leadership. In addition to meeting these objectives, price decisions must be carefully coordinated with the marketing-mix strategy. Pricing is only one of the marketing-mix tools that a company uses to accomplish its objectives, and pricing decisions affect and are affected by product design, distribution, and promotion decisions. All of these elements must be carefully coordinated when designing the marketing program.
Costs set the floor for the company’s price, which must cover all the costs of making and selling the product, plus enough profit to generate a fair rate of return. There are organizational considerations that come into setting prices, and management must decide who is responsible for setting price. In large companies, some pricing decisions may be delegated to lower-level managers and salespeople. Production, finance, and accounting managers also influence pricing. Usually, however, pricing is such an important issue that top management sets pricing policies and gives final approval to proposed prices.
External factors that influence pricing decisions include the nature of the market and demand; competitors’ prices and offers; and other factors such as the economy, reseller needs, and government actions. The amount of freedom a seller has in pricing varies with different types of markets, and markets characterized by monopolistic competition or oligopoly are especially restrictive.
Ultimately, consumer perceptions of price and value determine whether the company has set the right price. If the price is higher than the sum of the perceived values, consumers will not buy the product. Consumers differ in the values they assign to different product features, and marketers often vary their pricing strategies for different price segments. When assessing the market and demand, the company estimates the price elasticity of demand and the demand curve, which shows the probable quantity, purchased per period at alternative price levels. The more inelastic the demand for a product, the higher the company can set the price. Demand and consumer value perceptions set the ceiling for prices.
