I. Master Glossary List
1. headquarters – n- plural [countable]- the main building or offices used by a large organization
2. red eye – n- [uncountable]- AmE informal - a plane that makes a journey at night.
e.g. I took the red-eye to LA.
3. fib- vi –spoken-to tell a small unimportant lie.
e.g. I think you're fibbing.
4. diverge – vi- if two things diverge, they become different although they used to be the same e.g. Our business interests diverged and we had to sell the company.
5. espouse –vt-formal- to support an idea, belief etc especially a political one. e.g. This government claims to espouse the principle of freedom of choice.
6. byword -n [countable] - [+ for] -be so well known for a particular quality that your name is used to represent that quality. e.g. The political system had become a byword for fraud.
7. blurb - n [countable] -a short description giving information about a book, new product etc
8. jam –vi/vt- if a lock or a moving part of a machine jams, or if you jam it, it no longer works properly because something is preventing it from moving. e.g. The front roller has jammed on the photocopier.
9. upgrade –1.vi/vt- to make a computer or other machine better and able to do more things.
2.vt -to be given a better seat on a plane than the one you paid for
10. roller coaster -n [countable] - a situation that is impossible to control, because it keeps changing very quickly. e.g. Their relationship was a continual emotional roller coaster.
11. plummet -vi - to fall very suddenly and quickly from a great height. e.g. The plane plummeted towards the earth.
12. blurt sth out- phvt- to say something suddenly and without thinking, usually because you are nervous or excited. e.g. Peter blurted the news out before we could stop him.
13. skim-vi/vt- to read something quickly to find the main facts or ideas in it. e.g. She skimmed the sports page to find out who had won the game.
14. pretend- vi/vt- to behave as if something is true when in fact you know it is not. e.g. We're not really sisters; we were just pretending.
15. crackers -adj [not before noun] -BrE infml-crazy. e.g. This noise is driving me crackers.
16. falter- vi- to speak in a voice that sounds weak and uncertain, and keeps stopping. e.g. Laurie's voice faltered as she tried to thank him.
17. drivel- n [uncountable] -something that is said or written that is silly or does not mean anything. e.g. Don't talk such drivel!
18. gorgeous - adj infml - extremely beautiful or attractive. e.g. a gorgeous blonde | gorgeous silks
19. prickle- n- [countable] - a stinging feeling.
20. feign - vt - fml -to pretend to have a particular feeling or to be ill, asleep etc. e.g. Feigning a headache, I went upstairs to my room. | Mattie watched him approach with feigned indifference.
21. plant- v- infml- to put something firmly in or on something else. e.g. My grandmother planted a big wet kiss on my cheek. | She planted her feet firmly to the spot and refused to move.
22. sitcom - n [countable, uncountable] -a popular type of television or radio entertainment consisting of a series of amusing stories about the same set of characters.
23. commitment – n- [countable]- a promise to do something or to behave in a particular way. e.g. Jim's afraid of emotional commitments.
24. endearment - noun [countable] -an action or word that expresses your love for someone. e.g. whispering endearments to her | term of endearment (=a way you address someone you love)
25. dismay- n- [uncountable] -the worry, disappointment, and unhappiness you feel when something unpleasant happens. e.g. with/in dismay: Amanda read her exam results with dismay. | They stared at each other in dismay. | to sb's dismay: I found to my dismay that I had left my notes behind. | fill sb with dismay: The thought of making the journey filled him with dismay.
