PART C

INTRODUCING MYSELF

Let me introduce myself. I’m Svetlana Alexandrova. I was born on the 29th of March, 1985 in Bryansk under the zodiac sign of Aries. I believe that stars influence our fate and character. As you see, I’m Aries. They say that Aries is full of energy, a leader, a straight talker, ambitious and frank, likes sport, stubborn,

32

hot temper, but quick to apologize. Partially it is true. I can’t admit that I am stubborn. Actually, I’m persistent. It is different, I think.

As to my appearance, I’m rather tall and slim. I think, I’m even-tempered, rather reserved, calm and modest. But sometimes I can lose my temper and become either angry or sad. I like staying alone and sometimes I retire into my shell. But at the same time I like my friends, I like to laugh and to joke. I have got a sense of humour. It means that I understand humour and appreciate it.

But unfortunately, I’m not often witty myself. I think, I am able to “keep my head when all about me are losing theirs” and to stand up to difficulties when things are not going my way. Besides, I’m sincere and tolerant, friendly and faithful, hard-working and serious.

There are many things in our life that I like and dislike. I like when everything is OK. Being happy is one way of being wise. I like to study, because knowledge is useful sometimes. I am fond of reading. Sometimes I enjoy watching TV or listening to the music. I am sure that music makes people better. I’m fond of horses and equestrian skill. I dislike overcrowded buses. And I hate getting up early. I’m happy I have got more things that I like than I dislike.

PART D

MY FRIEND

Lucky are the people who have friends. I’m happy to have many friends too. Some of them are very close, some are less. But all of them make my life interesting and enjoyable.

I appreciate friendship. It’s a special thing. It makes happiness glow brighter and grief less painful, because we have friends to share it. When we doubt our ability to fulfill our aspirations or to reach our secret goal it is our best friend who gives us a spark of assurance. And we trust our friend and are grateful. Friendship is a bridge between loneliness and fellowship, frustration and confidence, despair and hope, setbacks and success. That’s why a true friend is a priceless gift. They are rich who have true friends, says a proverb and I agree.

I think, Natasha is my best friend. We have much in common: the same interests and attitude to life. Very often our opinions coincide, sometimes they differ. But we never quarrel, there’s a mutual understanding between us.

I like her appearance. She is a tall blonde with blue eyes. She’s not a beauty, but rather attractive. She has a sense of humour and often makes me laugh.

She lives far from my house. But we meet every day at the Institute. We are the same age. We spend a lot of time together discussing books, films, and performances, solving our problems, planning our future. We can talk about everything. I appreciate my friend’s advice.

34

I know, that the way to have a friend is to be one, so my friend can rely on me. I won’t let her down.

2.22. Прочитайте следующий рассказ. Составьте план и кратко перескажите его по-английски.

I’d like to tell you about my best friend Olga. She is my classmate and lives next door to me. Olga is а pretty girl. She is thin, slender and stylish. She has got lovely dark hair, blue eyes with long lashes and а straight nose. Her skin is fine. She usually wears sweaters with knee-length skirts or trousers.

Olga is an active and energetic person. She can’t bear just sitting around doing nothing. It makes her impatient and restless. She knows what she wants, and I think she is sure to achieve her goal.

Olga is hardworking, organized and does well at school. She is а kind of person who always knows how to have a good time. Olga has а good sense of humour and never looks moody. She enjoys being the centre of attention while I am always nervous in public.

I can’t say I’m passive, but still I’m different. My problem can be summarized in the words: lack of confidence. I’m shy with other people who may think I’m boring and stupid sometimes. Lack of confidence also makes me indecisive: I spend days trying to make up my mind what to do about quite simple things. Unlike my friend I’m disorganized and sometimes absentminded. I’m hardworking too especially when I’m doing something I’m interested in. But if you compare Olga and me, my friend is more mature for her age physically, emotionally, intellectually.

We both like reading fiction, exploring the city, its streets, churches and museums. We spend much time together, help each other to do our homework, go to the cinema, walk in the park, exchange books.

I respect my friend for her strong will, cheerful and kind character, her intellect and modesty. She is always full of ideas and knows what and how to do. It’s very pleasant to be with her around.

UNIT 3

MY EDUCATION

PART A

OUR ACADEMY

I am a first-year student of the Department of Management, State and Municipal Administration (Economy and Finance, Economic Security, Constitutional and Municipal Law, Mathematics and Information Technologies) at the Bryansk Branch of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. My future specialty is State and Municipal Administration (Organizational Management, Jurisprudence; Economy and Finance, Economic Security, Human Resources Management, Applied Computer Science in Management).

From 1998 to 2010 the Bryansk Branch was an organization department of the Oryol Regional Academy of State Service. Then it became the Bryansk Branch of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. The RANEPA was established in September 2010 by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation through merging the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation, the Russian Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Russian Federation, and 12 other regional civil service academies.

The Bryansk Branch is headed by the candidate of political science Tatiana Sergeevna Bolhovitina. Tatiana Sergeevna has managed to create one of the most popular educational institutions of the Bryansk region. People can get here the following specialties: “State and Municipal Administration”; “Organizational Management”; “Jurisprudence”; “Finance and Credit”, “Economy and Finance”, “Economic Security”, “Human Resources Management”, “Applied Computer Science in Management”.

The Bryansk Branch of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration offers two forms of study: full-time and part-time. Full-time students may have general secondary education or secondary vocational education; part-time students may also have general secondary education, secondary vocational or higher education. Besides, the Bryansk Branch carries out retraining of state and municipal employees and improvement of their professional skills.

Now The Bryansk Branch of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration is one of the leading educational institutions in our region. More than 2 000 students graduated from it. The Academy has provided training and retraining of more than 7 000 state and municipal employees. Now more than 1 700 students get higher education here.

39

The Bryansk Branch has 6 departments: “Management, State and Municipal Administration”, “Economy and Finance”, “Economic Security”, “Constitutional and Municipal Law”, “Mathematics and Information Technologies” and “Social and Humanitarian Disciplines”. The Academy provides a bachelor's, doctor's and master's degree.

The priority guideline of the Bryansk Branch of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration is a high professional level of the teaching staff that successfully allows solving the problems of up-to-date education, to connect training with practice, and it is one of the distinctive features of the Academy. The director of this educational institution T.S. Bolhovitina has collected highly qualified teachers. More than 80 percent of all the teachers have candidate or doctor degrees. Students can attend lectures and seminars of the professors and lecturers not only from Bryansk, but from Moscow and Oryol. Heads of some government bodies also work here as lecturers.

Students of the Bryansk Branch of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration have a brilliant opportunity not only to get extensive knowledge and carry out their scientific work but they can also reveal their social activity.

The system of student self-government functions here and appears to be one the important instruments of creating the ground for the forming of future leaders and people with active civil position.

The system of student self-government includes the Students’ Council, the Course Leaders’ Council, the Students’ Scientific Society, the Volunteers’ Unit «New Generation», the Historical Club «Memory», the Club of International Friendship «Friends Forever». Besides, students of the Academy can display their talents for sports, dancing, singing and others. Our students take part and win first places in many different regional, All-Russian and international festivals and competitions, such as Krasnaya Gorka, Noisy Farce and many others. The most talented students receive grants and honorary diplomas of the Academy, the Governor and the Regional Duma.

So you can see that the Bryansk Branch of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration is really an exceptional educational institution. Everyone should be proud to study and work here and to be a member of such a privileged society.
