7. Іншомовні слова і вирази

Для англійських наукових, особливо гуманітарних, і, меншою мірою, технічних текстів характерним є вживання влучних іншомовних слів і ви­разів (зокрема, латинських, французьких і німецьких) у їхніх первісних формах:

However, a-priori this seems an undesirable redundancy. Однак апріорі це видається небажаною надлишковістю.

This outcome would seem to represent a reduction ad absurdum of the proposal. Може видатися, що такий результат становить зведення гіпотези до абсурду.

Для української науково-технічної літератури вживання іншомовних слів і виразів у їхніх оригінальних формах є значно менш характерним, тому вони, як правило, не переносяться в текст перекладу, а перекладаються:

This conclusion is a non sequitur. Такий висновок не є правомірним (або: ... не випливає з попереднього аналізу).

Pace Strom, this does not seem to be relevant. Згідно Строму, це не може вважатися суттєвим моментом.

There is no need to set up this ad-hoc system. Немає жодної потреби становлювати таку довільну систему.

Разом з тим, є невелика кількість досить відомих іншомовних слів і виразів (таких як apriori"апріорі", causafmalis"основна причина", abovo"з (самого) початку тощо), що можуть подаватися у перекладі у їхньому оригінальному написанні або у транслітерованому вигляді:

The author attempts to clean things up, by grouping these parameters together, but that is post hoc. Автор намагається виправити становище шля­хом групування параметрів, та все це вже робиться post hoc.

Hence, ceteris paribus, this analysis will be more complex than the other one. Отже, такий аналіз ceteris paribus буде складніший за інший.

Для більшої ясності перенесене з оригіналу у текст перекладу іншо­мовне слово або вираз може супроводжуватися його перекладом на укра­їнську мову, поданим у дужках або ж у примітці:

Gazdar concludes that the thesis is prima facie absurd. Гездар робить висновок, що ця теза є prima facie (на перший погляд) абсурдною.

Для перекладача-початківця такі слова і вирази можуть становити трудність тому, що можуть видатися англійськими словами або виразами, які не перекладаються за допомогою навіть великих спеціальних словни­ків. Тому слід пам'ятати, що не всі незрозумілі в англійському науковому або технічному тексті слова чи вирази можуть належати до англійської мови. Особливу трудність можуть становити ті слова і вирази, що не виділяють­ся у тексті курсивом (зазначимо разом з тим, що видавнича практика виді­лення курсивом іншомовних слів і виразів є нормою для англомовної літе­ратури).

Для того, щоб правильно перекласти іншомовні слова і вирази в ан­глійському оригіналі, а потрібно спочатку ідентифікувати такі мовні еле­менти, визначити, до якої мови вони належать, і встановити їхнє значення за допомогою відповідного перекладного словника або знавця відповідної мови. У тих випадках, коли перекладач не може перекласти певне іншо­мовне слово або вираз, такий елемент просто переноситься у його первіс­ній формі до тексту перекладу і тим самим його переклад "передовіряєть­ся" споживачу перекладу.

Оскільки перекладні словники не містять, як правило, переклади іншомовних слів та виразів, в кінці книги у додатку наводиться перелік типових для англійської науково-технічної літератури іншомовних слів та виразів з їхніми українськими відповідниками. Переклади інших слів та виразів, що не увійшли до цього переліку, можна знайти у деяких великих тлумачних словниках англійської мови, наприклад, у "Third International Webster's Dictionary ", та англійських або українських словниках іншомов­них слів.
