Captain Smith's burst of anger was caused, in the first place, by the unpardonable violence shown to the young and gentle Pocahontas. In the sweetness of her nature she had shown perfect trust in the white men and all knew she had only friendship for the people who had made their homes in the country of her father, the great Powhatan.
