Talking about attitudes to the ideal family

Read and translate this text and put three questions to it:

If a perfect family were to exist, what would they be like?

This is my first time ever thinking of such a question. Yes, what would a perfect family be like? Would they be a wholesome stereotypical American family, ready with a freshly baked pie to bring over? Families play a very large role in molding each other throughout the years and creating this personality within one another that affect also other people outside of the family. The world is filled with many problematic families and there are kids out there dreaming for a perfect family to pop into their lives and that is what we are to discuss. A perfect family, what is that? To me, an ideal family should be composed of a kind mother, a hardworking father and supportive siblings.

A mother, as I have always seen it, should be kind and not because this would benefit the kids in taking advantage of a let loose mother but because a kind mother would definitely help in proper child growth. My mother is definitely what others would perceive as kind and caring, but only when she wants to be. She’s always there like how any other compassionate mother should be, giving me good advice, cooking good food and most of all, telling me how much she loves me every day with a hug and a kiss. Sure, she may be hot headed; strict since she’s a business teacher and arrogant but trading her for my “ideal” mother would be wrong. My mother is wonderful being just the way she is, never prying too much into my social life and loving me for being myself like how a good mother should be.

Secondly, a hardworking father who always does his best to provide for the family while at the same time tries to spend as many hours with them as possible. This is truly an ideal father for me, never too forceful towards his kids, calm, loving and with a strong build in both mind and body.

To sum up I think in my ideal family there can be on the one hand good times and on the other hand bad times. But that is not the fault of this type of family, that’s just how life is. In every type of family there are good and bad times.

Activity One of the main problems of family life is the relationship between young people and their parents. State your position on one of the following set of questions:

1. When do usually young people move out of their parents’ home and start living in their own place?

2. What are the advantages of living with parents? What are the disadvantages?

3. Should young adults live with their parents until they get married? Why or why not?

4. In many countries young married couples live with their in-laws after marriage. Is this good? Why or why not?
