Retelling an Article Retelling-chart for an article

The steps of article retelling

  1. Find the information about the author and the source of the article.

  2. Read the title and try to guess what this article is about.

  3. Read carefully the first paragraph and scan the rest of the text to find out if you were right. Try to formulate the theme and the problems.

  4. Divide the text into parts and give each of them a heading. Read again if necessary.

  5. Read every paragraph carefully and choose (underline) the key ideas from each paragraph. Pay your attention to statistics and examples.

  6. Make up a summary of the article using the phrases for summary. Try to avoid details and focus on the key information.

  7. Find the sentences which represent the author’s conclusion. If it is implicit try to make surmises about this.

  8. Formulate your opinion.

  9. Think who this article may be interesting or useful to.

  10. Proof-read your review for accuracy. Don’t forget to use the appropriate language!

  11. Remember that the listener (the reader) should be able to understand the article based on your summary alone!
