rubbishy commercials or spectacles of sadism or violence – so long as they are quiet.

There is a limit to the amount of creative talent available in the world. Every day television consumes vas quantities of creative work. That is why most of the programmes are so bad: it is impossible to keep the pace with the demand and maintain high standards as well. When millions watch the same programmes, the whole world becomes a village, and society is reduced to the conditions which obtain in pre-literate communities. We become utterly dependent on the two most primitive media if communication: pictures and the spoken word.

Television encourages passive enjoyment. We become content with secondhand experiences. It is so easy to sit in our armchairs watching others working. Little by little, television cuts us off from the real world. We get so lazy, we choose to spend a fine day in semi-darkness, glued to our sets, rather than go out into the world itself. Television may be a splendid medium of communication, but it prevents us from communicating with each other. We only become aware how totally irrelevant television is to real living when we spend a holiday by the sea or in the mountains, far away from civilization. In quiet, natural surroundings, we quickly discover how little we miss the hypnotic tyranny of King Telly.

1.2.2. Прочитайте текст и скажите, какова позиция автора по отношению к освоению космоса:

Space Race

Almost every day we see something in the papers about the latest exiting developments in the space race. Photographs are regularly flashed to the earth from thousand and even millions of miles away. They are printed in our newspapers and shown on our television screens as a visible proof of man’s newest achievements. The photographs nearly sum up the results of these massive efforts to “conquer space” and at the same time they expose the absurdity of the undertaking. All we

17

can see is an indistinguishable blob which is supposed to represent a planet seen from several thousand miles away. We are going to end up with a little moon-dust and a few stones which will be put behind glass in some museum. This is hardly value for money when you think that our own earth can provide countless sights which are infinitely more exciting and spectacular.

The space race is not simply the objective search for knowledge it is often made out to be. It is just an extension of the race for power on earth. Only the wealthiest nations can compete and they do so in the name of pure scientific research. But in reality, all they are interested in is power and prestige. They want to impress us, their spectators, with a magnificent show of strength. Man has played power game ever since he appeared on earth. Now he is playing it as it has never been played before. The space race is just another aspect of the age-old argument that “might is right”.

We are often told that technological know-how, acquired in attempting to get us into orbit, will be utilized to make life better on earth. But what has the space race done to relieve the suffering of the earth’s starving millions? In what way has it raised the standard of living of any one of us? As far as the layman is concerned, the practical results of all this expenditure of money and effort are negligible. Thanks to space research, we can now see television pictures transmitted live half-way across the globe and the housewife can use non-stick frying-pans in the kitchen. The whole thing becomes utterly absurd when you think that no matter what problems man overcomes, it is unlikely that he will ever be able to travel even to the nearest star.

Poverty, hunger, disease and war are man’s greatest enemies and the world would be infinitely better place if the powerful nations devoted half as much money and effort to these problems as they do to the space race. For the first time in his history, man has the overwhelming technological resources to combat human suffering, yet he squanders them on meaningless pursuits.

If a man deprived himself and his family of food in order to buy and run a car, we would consider him mad. Individuals with limited budgets usually get their priorities right: they provide themselves with necessities before trying to obtain luxuries. Why can’t great nations act in the same sensible way? Let us put our house in order first and let space look after itself.

Раздел 1.3.

1.3.1. Прочитайте текст и определите его основную идею:

When I was a child I seemed to spend half of my life in front of a television. Every day coming home from school, all day long at weekends when we were at home and for much of the summer holidays, we set in front of the box. Before the age of 10 I most enjoyed watching children’s programmes. After this I had a period in which I enjoyed watching films and dramas, also soap operas, I shamefully admit.

However, as my views of the world changed, I found other interests, my attitude towards TV changed greatly. In the last few years I have very rarely switched on a TV, but often switched one off. In fact, for a couple of years I think I didn’t see a TV at all. I don’t really think that it’s good that all the people watching a television channel receive, learn and believe the same information, and are confronted with a very small selection of perspectives on things. I think it subconsciously influences people greatly, especially in their attitudes, and people become programmed in the way they think by what they absorb from the television. I don’t know, you could say that if it wasn’t for TV, they would receive a smaller amount of information about the world, about what’s going on, but I feel that in these circumstances people would receive more information from their immediate environment and live more real, practical lives based more on first-hand experience and less on second-hand information. I also see that television has a strong influence on people’s political ideas and very rarely offers any kind of religious or spiritual perspective on life, and I think that that’s not healthy for the society. I think that a lot of time people spend sitting in front of televisions could be spent developing themselves in more direct ways – learning skills, exercising, reading, creating things or any of the number of more useful activities.
