5. Criticising

1) I want to take you up on what you said about Asia being a high growth area.

2) No, not really. Surely this Asian boom is just the result of low pay and long hours?

3) Even so, I still think you've exaggerated its short-term potential.

4) You're not convinced?

5) Not at all, it's actually a result of great improvements in education and infrastructure.

1. Avoiding an answer

1) Do you agree that, with low interest rates and fierce competition from Chinese locomotive manufacturers, Korean banks are going to have a fight on their hands?

2) Of course, but I think you'd do better to ask one of the people sitting next to you.

3) Maybe not. But I'm sure you have an opinion on the matter.

4) Well, to be honest, I'm not really the right person to ask about that.

5) OK. Point taken. Perhaps we can talk about it later.

2. Conceding a point

1) Wouldn't you agree that in locomotive components business R&D spending is coming under increasing pressure?

2) Right, I see what you're getting at. And, of course only one percent of those that do make it to market ever recover their R&D costs.

3) But surely you realize that only a tiny fraction of patented products ever make it to market. About one in five thousand, in fact.

4) Yes, but to some extent strategic alliances between companies compensate for that.

5) Exactly.

3. Dealing with aggression

1) Do you really expect us to believe that big insurance companies are on the way out?

2) Yes, but you still haven't answered my question!

3) Frankly, yes, new laws have been passed. And the EC is very keen on deregulation.

4) Nonsense! It's the little telesales companies that have given insurance a bad name.

5) Sorry, could I just finish? Deregulation means the smaller companies will benefit most.

4. Clearing up a misunderstanding

1) If I understood you correctly, you said the computer industry had burned itself out.

2) Don't get me wrong. Innovation will continue, but a surplus of products clearly can't.

3) OK, fair enough. I see what you mean.

4) No, perhaps I didn't make myself clear. What I was trying to say was the rate of new product launches will have to slow down.

5) How do you mean? Product innovation is what the computer industry is all about.

5. Finishing the question session

1) Are there any more questions?

2) Right, if there are no other questions, perhaps we should wrap it up here. Thank you.

3) Of course. I think we all agree the Asia-Pacific region is the one to look at. Thanks.

4) Yes, I do. Particularly in the developing countries in the Far East.

5) Just one. Can I ask you if you expect to see an increase in cross-border investment?

Exercise 4. You received an invitation letter to the First Makassar International Conference in Civil Engineering (see Annex 2) and decided to participate. Read the welcome letter, and then follow the instructions below to be ready for your presentation. Annex 6 will also help you.

1. Fill in the registration form below. Spend 15-20 minutes preparing a 5-minute report on this subject, visual aids, handout and the necessary equipment. Just write down the main points. On your arrival at the conference find the program and make your report. Listen to other speakers, put at least three questions to some of them.

2. Tell your partners what the subject of your talk is. Tell them that at the end you will ask one of them to stand up and accurately summarize what you said. But don’t tell them who you are going to ask.

3. Give your talk. Make sure you speak for at least 5 minutes. Speak as fast as you can and imagine that you are talking to a group of experts in your subject. Don’t worry about your grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation. Keep talking! Your partners should interrupt you as often as necessary to check they understand.

4. Choose one of your partners to summarize what you talked about. If they can’t invite them to ask you as many questions as they need to so that they can.
