4.5.5.3. Changes in Weak Verbs

With the disappearance of an –e before –d in the past tense form the distinction between the 1st and 2nd classes did not exist any longer.

In NE a number of strong verbs (about 70) became weak. Among them are:

gripen – grip (class 4); chewen – chew, lien – lie (tell lies), crepen – creep (class 2); climben – climb, helpen – help, melken – milk (class 3), meten – met (class 5); shaven – shave, baken – bake, washen – wash, steppen – step, laughen – laugh, waken – wake (class 6), leapen – leap, slepen – sleep, walken – walk, wepen – weep, flowen – flow (class 7).

Some of these verbs have preserved strong forms alongside of the weak ones. The verb climb sometimes had a strong past tense form clomb.

A few verbs preserving strong forms occasionally had new weak forms. The verb weave (OE class 5, ME class 4) sometimes had the form weaved alongside of its usual forms wove, woven.

The verb shave (originally a strong verb of class 6) had alongside of weak forms a strong past participle (shaven), used attributively, as in shaven cheek.

The process of strong verbs becoming weak is still going on. In popular language we find such forms as knowed for knew, seed for saw, etc.

Some weak verbs became strong. The OE weak verb hӯdan - hydde - hӯded (ME hīden - hīdde - hid) became a strong verb of the 1-st class hide - hid - hidden. Cf. bite - bit - bitten

The verb dig (ME diggen – diggede - digged), probably of French origin, had weak forms in Shakespeare’s time. Later it developed strong forms dig - dug - dug after the pattern of the 3 rd class of strong verbs. Cf. sting - stung - stung, win - won - won

The OE weak verb of the 1 st class werian - werede - wered (ME weren – werde - wered) acquired forms of a strong verb of the 4-th class: wear- wore- worn Cf. bear - bore - born, tear - tore - torn

Some verbs preserved their weak forms of the past tense and acquired only past participle after the pattern of a strong verb. The weak ME verb shewen - shewede - shewed < OE scēawian - scēawode - scēawod (class 2) acquired past participle after the pattern of the 7-th class of strong verbs: show - showed - shown. Cf. know - knew - known, throw - threw - thrown, blow - blew - blown

A few irregular weak verbs became regular, e.g. reach - reached - reached < ME rechen - raughte - raught; stretch - stretched - stretched < ME strechen - straughte - straight. The original past participle of this verb has survived as the adjective straight.

4.5.5.4. Rise of Invariable Verbs

In NE a group of invariable verbs appeared, from verbs with a root ending in -d or -t, e.g. cut - cut - cut < ME cutten - cutte - cutt, shut- shut - shut < ME shutten - shutte - shut, set - set - set < ME setten - sette - sett, hurt - hurt - hurt < ME hurten - hurte - hurt, put - put - put < ME putten - putte - put.

The verbs cast, hit, thrust (all three of Sc. origin) and the verb cost (of Fr. origin) also belong here: cast - cast - cast < ME casten - caste - cast, hit – hit - hit < ME hitten - hitte - hit, thrust - thrust - thrust < ME thrusten - thruste - thrust, cost - cost - cost < ME costen – coste- cost.

Some strong verbs also became invariable burst < OE bresten - brast - brosten - brosten (class 3) and let < l ten - lēt - lēten - l ten (class 7), which developed a weak past tense lette already in ME.
