Simply the Simpsons

 

Almost 20 years ago, an animated short featuring the exploits of a dysfunctional American family got its own half hour prime time show. The animation was sloppy, the characters looked unrealistic, but the public loved it. Now, 400 episodes and 18 seasons later, The Simpsons hail as the greatest show of the 20th century. The series achieved success almost immediately upon release, and so a film had been on the drawing board since at least 1996. Considering the immense importance of a potential Simpsons movie and the constant ongoing work on the series, the production was slow and methodical, having started in 2001 and come to a close in 2006.

I'll talk about this from the perspective of someone who has never been a die-hard fan of this particular animation family, having seen no more than 5 episodes in their entirety. Admittedly, there were quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, such as Spider-Pig (which has, however, apparently bored quite a few people to death in the trailers) and the Green Day cameo, but the film's flow of great gags is fairly consistent all the way through. Despite the fact that inner knowledge of the series is not necessary, a considerable number of the jokes featured can only be truly appreciated by a fan who's been following the Simpsons on a regular basis.

Yes, it's a great way to relax and have a light, fun-filled evening, but my impression is that this is simply a marginally funnier and very highly polished (the style of the animation has essentially remained the same, but now has the added perk of non-intrusive 3D effects) regular episode that has been quadrupled in length (allowing for a better sense of immersion into the cartoon world) which, considering the Simpsons' initial humor and goofiness, isn't a bad achievement no matter which way you look at it. Just don't expect the best movie ever.
