Regular Expressions in Visual Basic for Applications
Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) allows the programmatic use of regular expressions (wildcards) in ways similar to those available from the Microsoft Word interface. The following Word macro, StarToMoon, does the same:

To run the StarToMoon macro, you may need to adjust your macro security settings in Word.

Regular Expressions in
StarOffice/OpenOffice.org
Writer
Microsoft Office has, for many years, been the preeminent office system available for use on the Windows platform. In recent years, in part because of price advantage, the StarOffice and OpenOffice.org office suite members have become increasingly popular as alternatives to Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. This chapter focuses on the use of regular expressions in the word processor component of the OpenOffice.org suite, OpenOffice.org Writer.
The support for regular expressions in OpenOffice.org is better than in Microsoft Word. More metacharacters are supported, and the regular expression syntax used in OpenOffice.org Writer is more standard than the syntax used in Microsoft Word. Of course, that difference in functionality is only one of many factors that you will likely consider if you are choosing between these popular word processors.
One piece of functionality in OpenOffice.org Writer that I find very useful is the Find All button. You have seen the use of the Find All button in many examples in the early chapters of this book. I find it a quick and useful way to see which test character sequences match a regular expression that I am testing. In a few situations, which are discussed later in this chapter, you do need to take care when interpreting the results shown by the Find All button.
OpenOffice.org version 1.0 does not support regular expressions. To make use of regular expressions, you will need OpenOffice.org version 1.1 or later.
