Wildcards in Microsoft Excel

Escaping Wildcard Characters

There may be times that you want to match the * or ? metacharacters not as metacharacters, but literally. To escape those metacharacters in Excel you need to use the ~ character (tilde).

So to match a literal ? character you use ~?, and to match a literal * character you use the pattern ~*. To match the literal tilde character you use the pattern ~~.

Try It Out

Escaping Wildcards

1.Edit the pattern in the Find What text box to ~~.

2.Click the Find Next button, and inspect the results, as shown in Figure 15-11. Notice that cell A17 is highlighted. Notice, too, that the list of matches in the lower part of the Find and Replace window is still displayed, which is potentially misleading.

3.The problem of the carried-over results from previous use of the Find All button can be avoided by clicking the Find All button again with the new pattern. If there is more than one match, you can use the navigation facility in the lower part of the Find and Replace dialog box to navigate to the desired cell. Click the Find All button.

4.Inspect the Find and Replace dialog box to confirm that carried-over results have been replaced by results relevant to the current search.
