Using Correct Manuscript Form
1. Manuscripts should be printed or typed on standard-size white paper.
2. The text should be double-spaced.
3. Print or type only on one side of each sheet.
4. On each page leave margins (2.5 cm) at the top, the sides, and bottom.
5. Indent the first line of each paragraph.
6. Pages must be numbered, preferably in the upper right-hand corner and far enough from the edge (about 1.5 cm down from the top).
7. On the title page supply the following information: the name of the translator, the name of the editor, the type of the original work, the number of pages in the translation, the source language, the target language, the number of illustrations, the target language title, the name of the author in the source language, the source language title, the full title of the source of the original, the place of publication, the name of publishing company, the year of publication.
8. Word processing makes available several features that are not available on the conventional typewriter — italics, boldface, various typefaces, and different possibilities for spacing. If the manuscript is being prepared for its final readership, then it makes sense to use these capabilities to make it as attractive and readable as possible.
When you have finished preparing the final version, proofread it again to correct any copying errors.
Translators argue that the translation can never really be finished. Even as one 'completes' the 'final' version one hears the tiny insistent voice saying: 'Hang on a minute; I've got a great idea!' In principle, no target text I ever 'finished' or 'polished' to the point where it could not be edited further and translation could go on forever; there is no definitive reading of a text nor a perfect rendering of ideas in written form (nor, therefore, a perfect' translation). In practice, however, there must, sooner or later (and for busy professional translators it is likely to be sooner), come a point where one has to stop tinkering with the target text. It is for this reason that we need the notion threshold of termination — the point at which the translator feels that the text is adequate to achieve the goal set for it.
The main requirements set for an adequate full-length written translation are:
1. Accuracy: all information presented in the original should be fully and faithfully rendered into the target language.
2. Brevity of expression: information should be expressed laconically (using few words to say much).
3. Clarity of expression: brevity of expression should not prevent understanding; your target text should be comprehensive.
4. Stylistic appropriateness: the target text should not deviate from the established literary language norms.
Questions
1.What is the main type of technical translation?
2.What are the main requirements set for an adequate full-length written translation?
Practical assignment 10
1. Study the following full-length example translations, comparing them with the original text. Explain the main decisions the translator made in producing each translation. Give your own version where you can improve on the target text.

Roll Gap Checker
General The Roll Gap Checker was developed to measure the roll gap distance, the deviation of the rolls and the rotatability of the rolls of a continuous caster.
Roll Gap The Roll Gap Checker offers an easy and quick method to measure the gap between the inner and outer bow of the rolls. Usually these measurements are performed on 3 lines at the same time.
The bearing clearance of the measured rolls has to be compensated by pressing the Roll Gap Checker against the rolls.
Alignment of the Rolls Not only the roll gap is important, also the alignment of the rolls has to be correct to achieve a good product quality. The alignment within a segment usually should match the requirements, because it is adjusted in the maintenance shop. But alignment between segments may be a problem if the segment is not fixed proper in the guiding.
For the measurement of the deviation of the rolls from the ideal radius of the caster, the Roll Gap Checker is supported by the rolls of the outer bow and measures the alignment of the roll in the inner bow. The bearing clearance of the supporting rolls as well as the measured rolls has to be compensated by pressing the Roll Gap Checker against the rolls. Construction To perform a measurement, the Roll Gap Checker is mounted to the dummy bar, replacing the dummy bar head. The Roll Gap Checker can be guided through the strand guidance in both directions, from top to bottom or reverse.
It is equipped with a pneumatic unit (operated with nitrogen) which enables the Roll Gap Checker to be contracted on demand. The reasons for the pneumatic springs are:
- If the dummy bar has passed the last driven roll the Roll Gap Checker is still pressed against the non-driven rolls of the last segment that should be measured. If any of these rolls stick, it may happen that the Roll Gap Checker cannot be extracted any more. In such a situation the Roll Gap Checker is contracted and may be easily moved out of the caster.
- The contracted Roll Gap Checker can enter the caster easier. The pneumatic springs are filled by the nitrogen tank inside the Roll Gap Checker.
A battery powered electronic unit processes and stores the signals of all sensors. Data are transferred wireless to the evaluation unit that stores and visualizes all data.
Top Loading To insert the Roll Gap Checker through the mold into the caster, protection plates are necessary to protect the mold against scratches. The pressure on the pressure plates is switched off, during entering through the mold, but the sensors that measure gap and alignment are pressed with springs against the mold surface. |
