C. 4. Read the text Preventative maintenance using a dictionary

Preventative maintenance is usually justified economically on continuous and/or highly automated processes, where the cost of lost production is high and where the failure of one piece of equipment brings the entire process to a halt. On safety grounds, preventative maintenance is necessary on other types of equipment, e.g. boilers and pressure vessels, whose failure may become dangerous.

This latter necessity is recognised in the Factories Act 1964 for many types of plant and machinery, so that a limited amount of preventative maintenance has become virtually obligatory.

The efficient Organisation of preventative maintenance is a complex and skilled activity which requires systematic record keeping, item numbering, spare parts stock control and stock keeping, inspection procedures, job analysis, work programming and planning. Whilst safety specialists cannot be expected to be experts in all these activities, they should study the subject in sufficient depth to appreciate them, and to evaluate how well they are organised and carried out in their own factory, works or Company. Preventative maintenance also requires a thorough analysis of the hazards that may arise.
