A.: Certainly. The Economic and Social Council is made up of 18 member-states elected by the General Assembly for a term of three years. It reports to the Assembly on various subjects ranging from economic situation in various countries to the international opium trade.

The Council makes agreements with specialist agencies of the UN such as Food and Agriculture organization or World Health organization or UNESCO whose tasks are to promote higher standards of living, better health and international cooperation in education and arts.

Q.: Расскажите, пожалуйста, как конкретно эти подсобные органы ООН осуществляют свои задачи.

A.: First of all they all have to await invitations to help; they cannot go into countries as they like. For instance FAO, that is the Food and Agriculture organization, if asked, sends experts to help countries with technical advice on how to grow more food and other crops, how to control plant and animal diseases, how to protect food in storage, and in general how to increase the yield of farms, fisheries and forests. It advises on soil conservation and the use of fertilizers.
