The kursk state medical university

Kursk is one of the oldest cities of central Russia. It is a large industrial, cultural and scientific center and has a number of higher educational establishments. The KSMU, which was founded in 1935, is one of them. During the years of its existence the University has trained more then 20 thousand doctors and pharmaceutists, 68 of whom have become Doctors and 420 - Candidates of sciences. Among the graduates of the University are: academician Skripkin Y.K. (Director of Central All- Russian Dermato -Venereological Institute), academician Nikolajeva -Menshikova V.N. (Russian chief cardiologist), associate members: Annenkov G.J., Astafjev V.J., Gour-jev V.N., five State prize winners (Bykovsky A.F. - Russian Leading Virologist, Skobelkin O.K. -Russian Chief Surgeon in laser surgery, Marasanov R.A. - Medical Service general, Gourjev V.N. - Head of Scientific Research Laboratory of CITO).

Nowadays, the University annually admits more than 600 students to the medical faculty and to the faculties of clinical psychologists, medical nurses, getting higher education, to the stomatological faculty, to the pharmaceutical faculty, to the faculty of biotechnology, to the pediatrics and medical prophylactic faculties, to the faculties of social work and economy of Health Care, to the faculties of foreign students' training, teachers' advanced training and internship. More than 3.600 students study at 70 departments of the university in 10 specialities (General Medicine, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Stomatology, Clinical Psychology, Biotechnology, Social Work, Health Care Economy, Medical Prophylaxis and Medical Nursing)

Highly qualified teachers give their experience and professional skills to their young colleagues. Many professors and teachers, including Doctors in Medicine, candidates of sciences and assistant professors, work at the University. Training of students, doctors and internship students is being carried out in accordance with the recent achievements in world science and technology with the use of modern diagnostic equipment and computers. The University has 12 display classes (with 221 work places), equipped with modern computers. During the educational process the students carry out research work, write degree-works. Those, who get good and excellent marks, study according to individual plans. Scientists of the University fulfil a great amount of diagnostic and consulting work in different clinics of the city and region, in chemist's shops. Specialists of the University take part in carrying out international projects, work on probation abroad.

The University consists of several buildings. It has students' dormitories. It also has a good base for carrying out educational process in clinics, polyclinics and chemists' shops, in control-analytical laboratories. The University has a high rating among institutes of medical profile in Russia.

Becoming a pediatrician

My future profession is that of a pediatrician. It is one of the most noble professions on Earth. I've dreamed of becoming a doctor since my childhood. So after leaving school I entered the Kursk State Medical University and in some years my cherished dream will come true. What can be more noble and humane than to help small children in solving their health problems? We understand that physical and mental health of future generations is one of the most vital state problems nowadays.

It is no easy matter to study at the faculty of Pediatrics. We must study a lot of special subjects, among them Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Surgery, and others. At our University many experienced specialists share their skill and experience, with us and help us to become highly skilled pediatricians. It goes without saying how important it is to have a thorough knowledge of special subjects to become a good specialist. That is why students must study hard, must do their best to master medical subjects and to acquire profound knowledge of their specialty. Our University trains highly qualified specialists and I am proud of it. But professional knowledge is not enough to become a good specialist. Only a good person may become a good children’s doctor. To be a good doctor means to be honest, unselfish, industrious, attentive to other people. Love for children and optimism are the most important features оf a good pediatrician. A kind doctor must be able to read what is in the child’s heart, to help him get rid of his fears. He is a man who always has an affectionate word for every small patient and who can console and cheer up both sick children and their parents.
