A travel agency provides travel and tourism services to the public on behalf of suppliers such as airlines, car rentals, cruise lines, hotels, railways, and package tours. In addition to dealing with ordinary tourists most travel agencies have a department for business travelers and some travel agencies specialize in commercial and business travel only. There are also travel agencies that serve as agents for foreign travel companies.

The modern travel agency first appeared in the second half of the 19th century. Thomas Cook developed the first package tour and established a chain of agencies in the last quarter of the 19th century. Other British pioneer travel agencies were Dean & Dawson, the Polytechnic Touring Association, and the Co-operative Wholesale Society. The oldest travel agency in the United States is Brownell Travel.

Travel agencies became more commonplace with the development of commercial aviation, starting in the 1920s.

Tourism is an important source of income for many countries. The Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 describes tourism as "an activity essential to the life of nations because of its direct effects on the social, cultural, educational, and economic sectors of national societies and on their international relations."

Tourism brings in large amounts of income into a local economy in the form of payment for goods and services needed by tourists. It also creates jobs in the service sector of the economy associated with tourism.

The service industries which benefit from tourism include transportation services, such as airlines, cruise ships, and taxicabs; hospitality services, such as accommodations, including hotels and resorts; and entertainment services, such as amusement parks, casinos, shopping malls, music venues, and theatres. This is in addition to goods bought by tourists.

Trains offer travelers a chance to relax as they ride through some of the world's most beautiful scenery. But often train stations are an attraction in their own right and belong to the world's most beautiful pieces of architecture.

Hamburg-based architectural data company released a list of 11 of the world's most spectacular train stations.

"Increasing numbers of cities are adorning themselves with eye-catching station buildings that, with their unusual roof structures, bright colors and extravagant shapes, become unique architectural landmarks of those cities," the report says.

King's Cross in London and Gare de Strasbourg in France are stations that are now part modern art and part historical landmarks.

Meanwhile, architectural masterpieces like Grand Central Terminal in New York and Chhaatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai are equally as impressive today as they were when opening in 1913 and 1888.

The subway in New York City operates around the clock and is the fastest way to get around the city. New York's subway network covers over 400 stations across the five boroughs.

Services run every few minutes, so passengers do not need to spend time studying the schedule in detail. However, tourists should be aware that there are express subway services which do not stop at some of the smaller local stations.

The subway is generally a safe and comfortable way to travel. However, it is crowded during rush hour periods. While there are steps to improve the system, the subway in New York has a reputation for being dirty.

There are also some safety issues associated with the use of the subway. Passengers should use common sense when traveling alone in the night. Violent crime is rare, but theft occurs quite often. Using busier stations and keeping valuable items hidden are good basic precautions
