1. Read the conversations:

1)- I’m dying for a drink of water, it’s so sultry today.

- There’s the bar over there, and you can order some lemonade or juce.

2) – Here’s a café. Would you like to go in and have lunch?

- But it’s too early for lunch.

- Oh, no. It’s never too early for lunch. I’m hungry as a hunter.

3) – What shall we order for dinner?

- I leave the choice to you.

- Good. Then we’ll have salad, clear soup, beafsteaks and coffee, well?

- ‘d add a piece of cake, if you don’t mind.

4) – May I offer you a cup of tea, Kate?

- Why, yes. Thank you.

- What sandwich shall I pass you?

- Pass me a ham sandwich, please.

2. Learn English table manners:

1) Use the knife and fork.

2) The Englishman keeps the knife in right hand, the fork in the left.

3) It’s not polite to take the biggest piece.

4) Don’t put your elbows on the table.

5) Put the napkin on tour lap.

6) Cut your meat into small pieces, one piece at time.

7) It’s not polite to leave a spoon in a tea cup. Put it on the saucer.

8) Don’t eat from your knife.

9) Don’t talk with your mouth full.

10) Never eat while eating.

11) Take a slice of bread from the breadplate with your hand. Don’t take your bread with a fork.

12) It’s polite to finish everything on your plate.

13) Don’t reach across the table, simply say: “Would you pass me the salt (fork, knife), please?”

3. Role-play the dialogues:

1) – What would you like for dessert, Mrs. Adams?

- Is there banana ice-cream on the menu?

- I’m afraid, there is not. You’ll have to take strawberry ice-cream. It’s very good.

2) - Welcome to our restaurant, sir.

- Thank you. It’s very cosy here and not hot.

- Yes, sir. The restaurant is air-conditioned. What will you have?

- Do you serve local food here?

- We have a very wide choice. Our guests come from different countries, you know, and we serve both continental and local dishes.

3) - Shall we take this table?

- Yes, we’ll be very comfortable here.

- What would you like to begin with?

- I’ll have tomato juice.

4) - What shall we order for dessert?

- Anything you say.

- Do you mind if I order vanilla ice-cream?

- That’s all right with me.

5) - Would you like a cup of tea?

- Yes, please.

- Help yourself to scones.

- Thank you.

- How about some cream?

- No, thank you. Could you pass me the sugar, please.

- Can I have another cup of tea?

- Yes, certainly.

6) – Are you ready to order?

- Yes.

- What would you like to drink?

- I’ll have pure orange juice.

- What would you like to eat?

- I’ll have a hot apple pie.

7) - Could you show me the menu, please?

- Here it is.

- Two cheese and tomato pizzas.

- Certainly. They’ll be ready in ten minutes.

- A bottle of mineral water, please.

- Here you are. That’ll $ 2.50.

- Thank you very much.

8) - Are you ready to order?

- Yes, a cheeseburger, please.

- Anything else?

- A large coke, please. I’m very thirsty.

- Here you are.

- Thank you.
