Наиболее важным показателем экономической эффективности применения железобетонных шпал является высвобождение ценной древесины для нужд народного хозяйства. Применение железобетонных шпал позволяет сократить расходы на текущее содержание пути, поскольку на таких шпалах путь более стабилен.

Срок службы железобетонных шпал составляет от 35-50 лет в зависимости от грузонапряженности. Опыт эксплуатации железобетонных шпал показал, что срок их службы при здоровом земляном полотне и балластном слое, соответствующем техническим условиям, зависит от конструкции шпалы, типа рельсов и скреплений, грузонапряженности, скорости движения и осевых нагрузок.

В процессе эксплуатации пути с железобетонными шпалами происходит накопление износов рельсовых скреплений, что побуждает производить смену рельсо-шпальной решетки с перекладкой её на менее деятельные линии, а значит – на станционные и подъездные пути.
