Grammar
Рассмотрим способы перевода инфинитива, когда он выступает в роли подлежащего, определения и обстоятельства.
Подлежащее |
В этой роли инфинитив стоит в начале предложения, перед сказуемым, и может переводиться или неопределенной формой глагола, или существительным. Инфинитив с зависимыми словами образует инфинитивную группу, которая заканчивается перед сказуемым:
To lobby monopolist’s interests is advantageous activity. |
Лоббировать интересы монополиста выгодно. (Лоббирование интересов монополиста – выгодно) |
Exercise 46. Translate the following sentences into Russian:
1. To produce this product with better design is profitable for producers. 2. To compete is to rival for buyers’ money. 3. To be a monopolist is to produce unique product. 4. To carry out the antitrust regulation is not easy. 5. To retain the license was very important for the factory.
Определение |
В роли определения инфинитив стоит после определяемого слова (существительного, неопределенного местоимения, порядкового числительного) и отвечает на вопрос какой? Инфинитив в форме Simple Active чаще переводится неопределенной формой глагола:
The firm was trying to find a way to keep its monopolistic power. |
Фирма старалась найти способ сохранить свою монополистическую власть. |
Инфинитив в функции определения часто выражает возможность, способность или долженствование и переводится придаточным предложением, обычно с союзом который:
In antitrust committee the director got the forms to fill in. |
В антимонопольном комитете директор получил бланки, которые надо было заполнить. |
|
This technology is good to be bought. |
Эта технология хороша для того, чтобы её приобрести. |
Exercise 47. Look through the text «What «Monopoly» is?»
in exercise 37 and find infinitive in the function of attribute. Translate the sentences.
Обстоятельство |
Инфинитив употребляется в функции обстоятельства для выражения цели и следствия и отвечает на вопрос для чего?
В функции обстоятельства цели, поясняя зачем? почему? и т.д. совершается действие. Встречается в начале или в конце предложения. При переводе на русский язык перед инфинитивом обычно ставят союз чтобы, для того чтобы. Иногда инфинитив вводится сочетанием in order и so as, хотя чаще они опускаются.
The antitrust committee was created to control the monopolies activity. |
Антимонопольный комитет создан для того, чтобы контролировать деятельность монополий. |
Вы уже знаете, что инфинитив в начале предложения может быть также подлежащим. Чтобы правильно перевести предложение, начинающееся с инфинитива, нужно сначала попытаться перевести его, не добавляя союз чтобы. Если это не удастся, значит, при переводе этот союз следует добавить:
To sell coffee all you need is a place to do business. |
Чтобы продавать кофе, все, что вам нужно – это место для торговой точки. |
To sell decaffeinated coffee is to take care of customs` health. |
Продавать кофе без кофеина – значит заботиться о здоровье потребителей. |
В функции обстоятельства следствия инфинитив ставится в конце предложения, и ему обычно предшествуют слова too - слишком, enough - достаточно. При переводе на русский язык обычно используется союз (для того) чтобы:
The firm is big enough to become a monopolist. |
Фирма достаточно крупна, чтобы стать монополистом. |
Exercise 48. Translate the following sentences:
1. In practice, true monopolies are too hard to find because of legal barriers. Some monopolies are legal monopolies, it being illegal to enter the industry to compete. 2. To prevent utilities from exploiting their monopolies with high prices, they are regulated by government. 3. To get around this problem, some municipalities and government districts own the local utility and provide the service at cost. 4. In contrast, the firm is better-off under monopoly, as it can manipulate price to increase profits. 5. To check whether the described situation is efficient or not, let’s suppose that the two firms merge to jointly produce steel, fish and eventually pollution. In this case, there is no externality as the costs of pollution to the fishing activity have been internalized. 6. If a monopolist is making losses, it means that it doesn’t make economic sense to produce the good in question at all, because even under the most favorable conditions to the producer he cannot get revenues sufficient to cover all opportunity costs of production. 7. To ascertain how inefficient monopoly is, we can try to measure the difference between the consumers’ utility loss and the producers’ profit gain associated with the change from monopoly to perfect competition. The government requires a permit to operate in the industry, and limits the number of permits.
Exercise 49. Translate the following sentences from Russian into English. Pay special attention to the infinitive as an adverbial modifier.
