Practice in economic analysis
Exercise 19. Read the text. Which market classification does the coffee market most accurately fit? Explain.
Starbucks coffee
Anyone who has been to Seattle, Washington recently, knows the importance of coffee. Several years ago, a firm called Starbucks opened a series of gourmet coffee shops in the city. Within a short while business was booming, and Starbucks was making enormous profits. The success of Starbucks attracted competition, and hundreds of new firms entered the market during the 1990s. Entry was easy: After all, to sell coffee all you need is a place to do business, a coffee maker, perhaps an espresso machine, and some effort. Today, Seattle’s landscape is filled with coffee and espresso signs; even McDonald’s sells gourmet coffee there. Starbucks has expanded nationwide, and it is likely to attract competition wherever it goes because entry into the market is easy.

Exercise 23. Look through the text. Can you characterize the US agricultural products market as a perfectly competitive market? Why?
