Lesson 3 and 4: “Gerund and gerundial constructions”
1. Read and translate the following sentences. Pay attention to the translation of the gerund and gerundial constructions.
1. I dislike your interfering in my affairs. 2. I am looking forward to sending this article. 3. I am looking forward to being sent to Leningrad on business. 4. The professor was surprised at your having missed so many lessons this term. 5. I am fond of translating articles like this. 6. I don’t mind your going there. 7. Everything depends on the documents being sent straight away. 8. Thank you for reminding me about it. 9. Thank you for doing this work for me. 10. I don’t understand your way of doing it. 11. Will you ring up professor Petrov before seeing to the matter? 12.Excuse my interrupting you. 13. His suggestion needs considering first. 14.Do you remember taking your final exam? 15.He is busy looking up the figures for the report. 16.The conference hall was packed, but people kept on coming. 17. I avoided speaking to them about that matter. 18. They went on talking. 19. He keeps insisting on my going to the conference. 20. Do you mind my asking you a difficult question? 21. Would you mind coming again in a day or two? 22. I can not put off doing this translation. 23. He postponed going to New York as he fell ill. 24. A lot depends on your pointing out the mistakes at once. 25. Why don’t you do the work properly without being reminded? 26. He doesn’t like praising people too often. 27. 2. Translate from Russian into English in written form using the gerund and gerundial constructions then translate the sentences orally:
