2. Translate the sentences from Russian into English. Read the translated sentences aloud.

1.Translate the sentences paying attention to the conjunctions and prepositions.

I. Analyse the meaning of the modal verbs. Translate the sen­tences into Russian.

It is fantastic and it cannot be true. 5. I'm wonder­ing if something can be done about it. 6. We were both silent. What we had said could not be taken back. 7. It's one of those things a person has to do; sometimes a person has to go a very long distance out of his way. 10. I know everything. You don't have to explain. 11. The arrangement was that you were to give your views and I was to say what I thought of them. 17. 2. Read outloud the following sentences containing modal verbs. Translate them into Russian. Take care not to confuse the forms of modality and their meanings.

1. He must have left. He should have left. 2. He had to do it. He should have done it. 3. She needn't have taken the trouble. She didn't have to take the trouble. 4. I have to tell you every­thing. Let me say what I have to say. 5. What time did you have to finish your work? – We were to finish it by Monday. 6. You might not do it at all! – On the contrary, I ought to do it!

3. Transform these sentences using modal verbs. Read loudly the transformed sentences.

1. The president will perhaps call a press conference. 2. It's a pity you've destroyed the document and spoilt the work. 3. Perhaps, you are right but I'm not going to change my mind. 4. It was certainly very foolish of him, for everybody laughed. 5. I'm sure she didn't do anything of the kind. 6. I don't think it was necessary to help him. 7. I don't believe he has betrayed his friends and his work. 8. It was clear the family were expecting some guests. 9. Is it possible that he should have refused to help them? 10. It is quite possible that he has refused to help them. 11. This fellow, he thought, doesn't look like a teacher. 12.He is obviously absent. 13. This is a silly business, and likely to give us a lot of trou­ble. 14. His sudden disappearance admittedly puzzled his colleagues. 15. Why blame the secretary? May be she didn't know it was so urgent. 16. The election agent, evidently, didn't take care of his candidate. 17. Perhaps, you changed at the wrong station, that's why it took you so long to get here. 18. I see no reason why we should argue. 19. Was it so very necessary that you should have gone there at all? 20. I'm sure, Roger has failed to win the bet. 21. And so, plainly, Clyde was lying: his story was too thin. 22. It's impossible to be a hundred per cent sure. 23. Their neighbours, unseen and unheard, were apparently still away for the summer.
