Some people have the mistaken idea that a home computer is really just a calculator in a box. Although a computer does crunch numbers (and crunch them very well), home versions of spreadsheet programs can harness this power in much more creative ways, turning a home computer into a real labor-saving device. Easy-to-use programs can balance your checkbook, calculate mortgage payments and car payments, record travel expenses, and predict changes in property values or what stock would be the best investment over a period of years. Some spreadsheet programs can also produce graphs, flowcharts', and other visual aids to help interpret information. And - oh yes - the computer can help figure out your taxes, too!

Community Spreadsheets

Big projects are always easier when you have a little help from your friends, and spreadsheets are no exceptions. By using computer networks and telephone connections, people in different locations can now work on the same spreadsheet at the same time - an ideal way for a community charity, for instance, to finalize a fund-raising drive. Without leaving home, workers can give immediate feedback" to each other, fill in gaps of knowledge, comment on each other's work, and approve changes made. Just the thing for a cold, rainy night!

Переводчик выбирает слова, выражающие более узкие понятия, чем слова подлинника или. наоборот, при переводе используются слова, имеющие более общие значения.

В английском языке, например, широко употребляются глаголы, выражающие общие значения, даже при описании конкретных действий. Например, глаголы to go. to have, to find, to come, to get. to give, to do. to make. В русском языке подобное использование слов с общим значением встречается крайне редко. Это относится и к конструкции there is/are. Слову язык, имеющему широкое значение в русском языке, в английском языке соответствуют два разных по смыслу слова: language и tongue.

Описательный перевод

Если ни один из переводческих приемов не позволяет передать значение переводимого слова или словосочетания, можно использовать прием описания. Описание должно быть предельно кратким.

Задание 23. Прочитайте предложения. Выберите наиболее удачный описательный перевод выделенных словосочетаний или подходящее им словарное соответствие. Объясните ваш выбор. Проанализируйте недостатки других вариантов перевода. Предложите свой перевод данных словосочетаний. Переведите предложения на русский язык.

Задание 24. Используйте прием описательного перевода для передачи на русский язык выделенных слов и словосочетаний. В предложении МЗ обратите внимание на уже данное описание слова "craquelure", которое рекомендуется перевести при помощи транскрипции. Описание некоторых терминов можно найти в словаре.
