IV. Look through the text and say whether the following

statements are true or false.

      1. Administration of financial aid programs is of minor importance for medical students.

      2. Families make some contribution to the student's educational expenses.

      3. A variety of loans, scholarships, grants are available for all students.

      4. Every student is eligible to receive financial assistance.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

It is common knowledge that increased costs have affected every aspect of the educational process. Colleges and universities in general, and health professions schools in particular, have been called upon to assist the growing number of students who cannot afford to carry the financial burden of the education required for professional training.

Health Sciences Center of the universities seeks to provide students with educational opportunities by administering its financial aid programs in accordance with policies and guidelines typical of most colleges and universities in the United States. The University bases the majority of its awards on demonstrated financial need, the difference between a family's expected contribution and the student's yearly educational expenses. Since the same method for analyzing the need (Uniform Methodology) is used in determining each family's ability to contribute to academic year expenses, the amount of support expected from the family will be the same at all institutions.

A variety of loans, scholarships, and grants are available to full-time and, in some cases, part-time students. A selection process is used to see that the most deserving and best qualified students have first call on available resources. In addition, some forms of financial aid are restricted to minority students and to students in specific areas of study.

An entering student should obtain the necessary application packet as early as possible from the Office of Financial Aids. Applications will be accepted throughout the year; however, applicants are cautioned that it takes several months to process applications and that applications submitted late may not be evaluated in time for eligible students to receive funds until after classes begin. Students must submit an application for financial aid each school year.

V. Read the text and look for the answers to the following questions.

X. What is grade "P" used for?

        1. What does "AS" stand for?

        2. Why is grade "I" named incomplete?

        3. Does "X" grade mean advanced progress in learning?

        4. What is peculiarity of audit grade?

GRADES

The passing grades used are A-D, and under certain conditions, P, S, and AS. Non-passing grades are F, NP, and U, "A" is the highest passing grade and is given for superior or outstanding work. "D" is below standard work and may be considered passing at the undergraduate level only, unless otherwise prohibited by the published grading rules of the college, department, or program concerned.

It is the prerogative of each college to establish minimum grade requirements for satisfactory progress, for required courses, for elective courses and/or for satisfactory completion of degree requirements. Nothing in this section prohibits more exacting standards than "D" (passing) or "C" (average) for meeting degree requirements.

"P", meaning passing, and "NT", meaning non-passing, are neutral grades in so far as the grade point average is concerned.

The grade of "S'\ meaning satisfactory, and "U", meaning unsatisfactory, may be used in courses which base credit on attendance or where the grading must be of a non-competitive nature such as directed readings, seminars, special studies, and the like. The entire course must be graded "S"/"U", and the grading for each specific course must be approved by the college to which the course belongs. "AS", for advanced standing, represents credit earned by a departmental advanced standing examination.

Students who receive an "F" grade in a required subject must, if possible, register for the required course again the first time it is given.

"I" is a neutral grade and means incomplete. It is not an alternative to the grade of "F" but is intended as a temporary grade to be used when a student who, for reasons satisfactory to the instructor, is unable to complete certain identifiable requirements of a course and who cannot be assigned any other appropriate grade. Typical instances might be absence from final examination due to illness or inability to submit a term project due to extenuating circumstances. In the event of an "I" grade, the student should contact the instructor who will indicate to the student what must be done to complete the course and will also set a time limit appropriate to the circumstances. The time limit set may not exceed one calendar year from the end of the term in which the student was enrolled in the course. If by the end of the year no change in grade has been submitted, the grade of "I" will become permanent. After a grade of "I" has become permanent, a student may re-enroll in the course. Further, the instructor must identify on the grade sheet on which the "I" was given the specific requirement for removal of the "I" grade. "Incomplete" is not an acceptable explanation of the "I" grade.

"X" is a neutral grade indicating that satisfactory progress is being made on thesis or dissertation research. It is a complete grade when the final entry is either "S" or "U" which indicates the acceptance or rejection of the thesis or dissertation. An intermediate entry of "U" may, if circumstances warrant, be given but the grade reporting form must carry the notation that this is not anticipated to be a final grade for the program. A grade of "X" is included in hours earned and hours attempted.

A "Y" grade is reported at the end of the first semester for a two- semester course.

"W", meaning withdrawal, is a neutral grade assigned when the student is passing at the time of withdrawal. A student who withdraws from a course with failing grades shall receive the grade of "F".
