VI. Comment on the following points mentioned in the text.

          1. Periodic Review Committee is responsible for student's promotion from one year to the next.

          2. 2.0 Is a cumulative grade point average is necessary for students' promotion.

          3. Students who don't meet promotion or graduation requirements are proposed to repeat a course, term or the entire year.

PROMOTION AND GRADUATION

Each class has a Periodic Review Committee which evaluates the progress of each student at appropriate intervals, and not less than once each semester. Students with severe problems will be reported to the Office of the Dean for counseling.

Promotion from one year to the next, or graduation, will be contingent upon the student achieving a grade point average of 2.0 for the school year. Any student with less than a 2.0 average will be reviewed by the Periodic Review Committee and may be recommended to the Promotions and Advancement Committee to repeat the year on probation or be dismissed. Any student who repeats the year and does not achieve a 2.0 cumulative grade point average for the repeated year will be dismissed from the College of Dentistry.

No student will be allowed for academic and/or disciplinary reasons to repeat more than one school year.

Promotion from one year to the next or graduation will also be contingent on assessment by the appropriate Periodic Review Committee and Promotion and Advancement Committee that the student has achieved the skills and knowledge necessary to undertake a higher level of studies or to be graduated. As indicated in the section on grading policy, this decision will be based primarily on the quality of performance, the judgment demonstrated by the student, and the quantity of work completed. A student not recommended for advancement will either repeat the entire year or be dismissed from the College.

Senior students not completing their requirements for graduation by the last regularly scheduled clinic session will be given until the end of the summer session to correct their deficiencies. If they have not met graduation requirements by this time, they will be required to repeat at least one additional semester, as determined by the fourth-year Periodic Review Committee and the Promotion and Advancement Committee. In such cases, each clinical department may request that additional work be completed in its area in order for the student to maintain proficiency. These additional requirements will be given to the student in writing by the departments.

No student may be graduated from the College with less than an overall (2.0) "C" grade point average. A student may appeal any action of a Periodic Review Committee, Promotion and Advancement Committee, and/or Dean according to procedures and policies set forth by the Academic Appeals Board.

VII. Read the text and compare with the Ukrainian system of health education.

Schools of Public Health no longer primarily train workers for the traditional State or local health department setting. In response to a demand for new types of health workers and a broader concept of public health, the schools have made major efforts to train students in health administration and environmental health, now the two most frequently chosen areas of specialization. Hospital administration is treated as separate discipline; environmental health narrowly displaced epidemiology as a second most frequently chosen speciality. The students of schools of public health may choose various areas of specialization:

behavioral and social sciences; biomedical laboratory sciences; dental public health; environmental health; health administration; hospital administration; maternal & child health; public health social work; public health nursing; public health education; occupational health.

biostatistics; dietetics; epidemiology; gerontology; health planning; health policy; international health; mental health; nutrition; population studies
