9. Answer the questions:
What microscopic rock properties do you know?
What does the drillability of a rock depends on?
How does quartz content influence the penetration rate and tool wear?
How can tripping time and bit replacement costs be reduced?
How does crystal form affect drilling?
Is it easier to drill a coarse-grained or fine-grained rock structure?
Why must weight on bit be sufficient in hard formations?
Why does a rock's compressive strength increase with depth?
How does porosity affect drilling?
What negative effects can cracks cause?
How can drilling mud change the formation material?
10. Find the information in the text which will prove that:
The drillability of a rock depends on
the hardness of its constituent minerals;
the grain size;
crystal form.
Formation zones that are porous-characterized drill faster than nonporous areas.
Weight on bit must be sufficient to overcome rock’s compressive strength.
The macroscopic properties of rocks are often оf great significance in drilling.
Rock hardness and abrasiveness require care in bit selection.
11. Prove that formation properties must be carefully observed to achieve success in drilling.
12. Translate the sentences paying attention to the conjunction since:
Since quartz is a very hard material, high quartz content makes the rock very hard to drill.
Students have changed greatly since they graduated from the university.
Compressive strength generally increases with depth, since pressure from the overburden increases.
Our company has been developing this field since 1992.
Soft rocks make it difficult to achieve a good hole quality, since the walls often cave in.
13. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct form:
Most sedimentary rocks (to classify) according to their grains size.
The particles of consolidated rocks (to cement) firmly to one another.
The texture of igneous rocks (to vary) according to the depth at which rocks (to form) many years ago.
Crude oil widely (to use) for producing liquid fuels for many years.
Soft rocks (to penetrate) easily with a tool and (not to resist) greatly the separation of a part from the mass.
Hard rocks (to have) the highest resistance to penetration with a tool.
When specialists (to determine) drillability of the formation they (to drill) they (to choose) the most suitable bit.
14. Translate the passage into English:
