Everyday english making and accepting invitations
To make invitations you can use any of the following structures. Invitations often begin:
‘Would you like to…?’
‘Are you free this evening / next week / next Sunday? We are throwing a party. Would you like to come?’
‘What are you doing next Sunday? How do you fancy going for a sail?’
‘Would you like to come swimming with us tomorrow?’
‘Let’s go climbing next weekend.’
‘How do you fancy going for a long drive next weekend?’
‘Do you fancy coming to the theatre tonight?’
Accepting Possible formal replies are:
‘Thank you very much. That would be very nice.’
‘I would love to, thanks.’
‘That sounds great, thanks.’
‘What a great idea, thanks.’
Declining Sometimes you may not be able to accept an invitation. Polite ways of declining an invitation are:
‘Sorry. I’m afraid I’m not free.’
‘That’s very kind of you, but I have got to do something else on Sunday.’
‘Well, I would like to, but I am not free.’
‘I don’t think I can come – I have got something else on.’
Speaking tip
If you accept the invitation don’t forget to thank people for hospitality at the moment of leaving their houses.
Be polite when you decline an invitation. Thank the person for making an invitation and a give a reason why you can’t accept the invitation.
Sample Dialogue 1
A: I’d like to invite you on the marriage ceremony of my son.
B: What a great occasion, I will definitely be there.
Sample Dialogue 2
A: I would be very pleased if you join us on dinner tonight.
B: That’s very kind of you but actually I’ve an important meeting this evening.
