Situation 1
Discuss the peculiarities of futures trading which helps to forecast and regulate the economic processes. Speak about the main rules of futures trading and possibilities of becoming its participant. Focus on the following items:
- What terms should be observed in order to take part in the trading?
- Specialists say that futures can be used for protective purposes (to protect money from inflation). How can you comment on this point?
- What advantages and disadvantages does futures trading have in the sphere of international relations and trade?
Situation 2
The broker. You forecast the increase of demand for euros in the currency market. In order to fulfill a profitable futures contract you have to make a deposit which you don’t have at the moment. You’d like to ask one of your clients, who is a banker and your friend at the same time, to provide you with a loan for buying these profitable futures. You think that friendship is more important than business. Try to convince your friend that you are a reliable borrower and the currency market situation is quite favorable.
The banker. You want to help your friend but at the same time you’d like to earn money, buying these futures, too. Your task is to explain that in business everyone plays for himself and this futures is not as profitable as it seems.
Brainstorming activity
Problem 1
A broker bought a long-term futures for euros. He supposed that currency rate will increase after the elections to the European Parliament in half of the year. Unfortunately, in a month, the rate of euros began to fall. The risk of losing money began to rise. What would he do?
Problem 2
The company «Black Coal» is a large exporter of coal. It planned to hedge the future profit in dollars and made a contract for selling dollar futures in some time. However the dollar rate started to increase (the increase of current rate exceeds the rate of futures). That may make future sales of this currency unprofitable. What should this company do?
Final discussion
Preparing for final discussion, try to search for extra information in special editions, magazines and financial text-books. Consult your teachers of special subjects and use the Internet resources. It is recommended to subdivide the group into 3 subgroups for better organization of the discussion.
Questions for discussion:
1. Why do you think individuals choose to invest their money in foreign currency deposits?
2. How would you forecast the fluctuations of the exchange rate in this country?
3. Why has no other development blossomed as fast as the boom in trading options and futures?
