I. B. Articles

Некоторые имена существительные могут иметь две формы – исчисляемую и неисчисляемую. Когда существительныое обозначает одну, конкретную вещь оно стоит в исчисляемой форме; а когда обозначает материал или общее понятие – в неисчисляемой форме:cloth– материал, ткань;acloth- тряпка;glass– стекло;aglass– стекло, бокал;iron- железо;aniron- утюг;paper– бумага;apaper- газета.

Существительные, обозначающие еду, могут употребляться в двух формах: chicken– курица (на обед);achicken- курица;chocolate– шоколад;achocolate- шоколадка;coffee– зерно;acoffee– чашка кофе;fish– рыба (на обед);afish– рыба (в море);teaчай;atea– чашка чая.

Yesterday we had chicken and chips for dinner. Вчера мы ели на обед курицу и жаренную картошку.

Другие слова, которые изменяют значение: business- бизнес;abusiness- фирма;gossip- сплетня;agossip- сплетник;hair- волосы;ahair- волос;help- помощь;ahelp- помощник;toast- гренок, ломтик хлеба;atoast- тост (пить за к-л.);work- работа;awork- произведение.

I’ll have toast and a coffee for breakfast. На завтрак я съем гренки и кофе.

Перед названиями праздников не ставится артикль the, например:

I love Christmas. Я люблю Рождество.

Happy Easter! Счастливой Пасхи!

II. B. Put the verbs in the present perfect

e. g. I’m eating my breakfast. – I have eaten my breakfast.

1. I (buy) a new car and now I drive to work. 2. She (finish) her work and now is watching TV. 3. We (drink) the whole bottle of juice. It is empty. 4. She (write) me a letter and I’m reading it now. 5. I (find) my glasses. They are here. 6. He already (give) up smoking. 7. Oh! You (cut) your hair. 8. Tom (break) his arm.

II. C. Practise the dialogues

a) - What about having some tea?

- Now, that’s an excellent idea. I know a good place just near here.

- You lead the way then and we’ll follow you.

b) - Mrs Brown. This is a present for you.

- A present? What a lovely surprise! Shall I open it now?

- Yes, of course.

- Ooh! Chocolates. I love chocolates... Thank you very much indeed.

- Thank you. You've been very kind.

c) - Good morning.

- Good morning. This way, please.

- Have you looked through catalogues?

- Sure! We've studied them closely. The

28 bus.

- Well, you’re lucky, the conductor found it.

new model is certainly good.

- Yes, it’s of high quality. We’ve just started producing the model and already received a lot of orders.
