The Stolen Car
Anthony Cook -AC- and his wife Jane - JCfrom Kirkcudbright in Scottland are on holiday in Ukraine. Today they are in Kyiv. Returning to the multi-storey carpark, they are horrified to find that their car is no longer there. Mr Cook calls the police from a telephone box. Police officer Stepan Masur - SM -, who works the desk, takes the call and later sends officers Hrygoriy Bondar -HВ - and Irene Wilchenko - IW-to the scene.
AC: Hello, my name is Cook, Anthony Cook. I'm a Scottish tourist. My car has been stolen. I left it in the car park here in Kyiv. Then we went on a sightseeing tour, and now the car's gone.
SM: Are you quite sure? AC: Yes, can you help us?
SM: I'll send a patrol car to investigate the matter. Please go to the entrance of the car park and wait for the officers.
Some minutes later, officers Bondar and Wilchenko are on the spot. After having satisfied themselves that the car has in fact been stolen and after having written down the personal details like full name, date and place of birth, nationality, residence and occupation, the officers ask Mr Cook some questions concerning his stolen car.
IW: Can you give me some details about your car? 139
AC: It's a VW Golf diesel, an estate car, metallic green. It's got five doors, you know. We bought it to have enough space when we go on holiday with the children. And it has lots of safety features; you see, it's brand new, we've only had it for six weeks. It has side impact bars, seat belt pretensioners and dual airbags.
IW: What's the registration mark? AC: It's V955GMY.
IW: Were there any important items inside the car?
AC: Yes, of course, all our luggage. Fortunately we have all the important things with us: cash, documents, credit cards, camera.
IW: Any other details about the car?
AC: It's equipped with dual automatic climate control, twin airbags, ABS and alloy wheels. The mileage is only 2,500 miles.
IW: Does the car have any extras?
AC: On the rear door, next to the numberplate, there is a GB sticker and a Saltire, you know, the Scottish flag: a white St. Andrew's Cross on a blue background. Inside the car there's a radio-cassette player, and the upholstery is black leather. On the left rear window there's a Channel Tunnel sticker. You see, this time we took 'Le Shuttle' instead of the ferry.
IW: Well, I think I've got everything I need for the time being.
AC: How could the thieves get our car out of the car park? I've got the ticket.
HB: Oh, they have their methods. JC: What shall we do now?
IW: First of all you should inform your insurance about the theft. JC: Oh my God, whatever are we going to do?
HB: Perhaps your car will have been found by tomorrow. Quite often youngsters steal cars for joyriding purposes and abandon them when the tank is empty.
AC: Sounds familiar, but why would speed-crazy joyriders steal a slow diesel?
HB: They'll steal anything, just for the thrill of it. Sometimes they even torch the vehicle when they've finished with it.
JC: Oh my God! Our new car! It took us years to save up for it. HB: Please calm down. It's not that easy to set a diesel car on fire.
IW: I suggest you stay in town tonight. Do you want us to find a hotel for you?
AC: Good idea! I think we might take you up on that. 140
