XI. A) Put the verb "to have " in the correct form. Make the sentences negative and

Interrogative where necessary :

1) An insect ... six legs. 2) I ... many relatives in this city. 3) Julia wanted to go on holiday but she... any money. 4) My pa­rents ... two children , a boy and a girl. 5) They like animals and ... three dogs and two cats. 6) Mary ... a car. She goes everyw­here by bicycle. 7) Everybody liked Tom. He ... a lot of friends. 8) It's a nice town. It ... a big shopping centre. 9) Ben doesn't read much. He ... many books. 10) “What's wrong ? I ... something in my eye." 11) We ... soon a new computer.

b) Extend the sentences according to the pattern. Note that "have" stresses the idea of

regularity, 'have got" is linked with "now" and means a particular thing:

Pattern: I haven't got any white shoes this summer.

1) She has parties every month ( this month ). 2) We have a letter from home every week (this week). 3) They always have a light sup­per ( tonight ). 4) I often have fish for dinner ( today ). 5) He often has a headache in the evening (tonight).

c) Pay attention to the verb "to have" in the following expressions: to have dinner/

breakfast, to have tea / coffee, to have a rest / sleep, etc. - in negative and

Interrogative forms it takes the auxiliary verb "to do ".

Make up your own sentences with the similar expressions:

E.g. We have a good time in Kyiv. Do we have a good time in Kyiv ?

We don't have a good time in Kyiv.

XII. Pay attention to the translation of the verb "to have" in the following sentences:

1) The territory of our country has an astonishing variety of landscapes. We have mountains , vast steppes , endless forests, beautiful rivers and lakes. 2) The fertile black soil and the favourite climate have long facilitated the growth of agri­culture in Ukraine. 3) Environmental problems of our country had to be discussed at a number of international conferen­ces. 4) Many holidays were first religious festivals but no­wadays many of them have nothing to do with religion. 5) The Ukrainian political system has a popularly elected Presi­dent. 6) Present-day independent Ukraine has inherited a rather developed system of education which answers the standards of the developed countries. 7) The people of the Earth have to join the efforts to protect the nature , rare and vanishing animals species.
