5) The aim of studying the oceans.

Тext В

Ocean basins and continents are unevenly distributed over the earth's surface. Most of the land lies in the northern Hemisphere. We may consider it to be the land hemisphere, while the Southern is clearly the water hemisphere. Viewed from space looking down at Antarctica , the world ocean is a broad band surrounding Antarctica with three northward projecting gulfs.

Although we are dealing with only one ocean  the world ocean, for convenience here it is divided into three parts: the Atlantic (including the Arctic Sea), the Indian and the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean  the largest of the three ocean basins  is nearly as large as the Indian and Atlantic oceans combined. It contains slightly more than half of the water in the world ocean. The Pacific has the greatest average depth (12.000ft). Relatively few rivers discharge into the Pacific Ocean.

In contrast to the Pacific, the Atlantic Ocean is a relatively narrow twisted body of water, bounding by nearly parallel continental margins. Including the Arctic Sea, the Atlantic Ocean has the greatest north-south extent. It connects the northen and southern Polar regions. Because of the many shallow adjacent seas (Carribean, Mediterranean, Baltic, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Sea ) and broad continental shelves, the Atlantic is the shallowest of the three oceans. Many rivers, including the world's two largest, the Amazon and Congo rivers , discharge into the Atlantic.

The Indian Ocean is bordered by Africa and Asia. The Indian Ocean extends only a short distance across the equator into the Northern Hemisphere. The average depth of the Indian Ocean is intermediate between the Atlantic and Pacific ocean averages.
