IV. Make the following sentences interrogative and negative: not forget to use "do", "did",

"does" or "did" with the verb "have")

l) We are to take four exams this term. 2) They are able to help her with the dinner. 3) He has to bring a piece of chalk. 4) She had to get some money for them. 5) Gill had to help the girls get ready. 6) They were to meet us at the station. 7) There was to be an interesting concert last night. 8) He had to take an umbrella. 9) I am to make the first report. 10) The teacher might want to see my note-book. 11) I can do this work in two days. 12) They must work at their design today. 13) He may come in.

V. Change the following sentences into Past and Future:

1) I must get off at the next stop. 2) He must get up very early on week-days. 3) Can she take a holiday from her office ? 4) She can never understand his love for dogs. 5) We must wait a little. 6) They must work a lot to know English well. 7) She cannot sleep, thinking of her mother all the time. 8) He may come in. 9) I must do my morning exercises every day. 10) Ann can help me with the translation.

VI. Translate into English paying attention to the modals and their equivalents:

1) Meteorologists must prepare several charts every day. 2) We have to use the centigrade scale for recording temperature. 3) According to the Weather Bureau we are to expect considerable frosts. 4) Convection cannot develop when strong winds are blowing. 5) By making experiments scientists were able to obtain interesting data. 6) Raindrops may evaporate as they fall. 7) A thunderstorm may drift with the general wind movement. 8) I might use instruments and I did. 9) Barometers should not be exposed to great changes in temperature. 10) You ought to correct your computation.

Text C WEATHER

When we want to learn about the weather, we usually ask:

  • What is the weather like (today) ?

  • How is the weather (today) ?

  • What do you think of the weather (today) ?

The answers may be:

  • The weather is fine ( beautiful, warm, nasty, calm, sunny, lousy).

  • It seems a fine (dull, rainy, wet, cool, warm, hot, cold, gloomy, lovely, frosty) day.

 It is fine (nice ,dusty, clear, slippery, beastly, nasty, foggy, windy, cloudy).

  • It is raining (snowing, freezing, clearing up, thawing, drizzling, raining cats and

dogs).

  • It looks like raining (snowing, thawing).

  • It is getting (becoming, growing) colder (warmer, cooler).

  • I think it will continue (keep fine).

 We shall have snow (rain, a thaw, frost, a thunderstorm).

Asking about the temperature, we say:

What is the temperature now (in the morning) ?

The usual answers are:

The temperature is rather high (low).

10 degrees (15 degrees etc.) above (below) zero.
