Мы используем для того, чтобы показать:
1. что действие было завершено до определенного момента в прошлом:
e.g. I had written a letter by two o'clock.- Я написал письмо к двум часам.
В таких предложениях используется выражение by + время (к которому совершилось действие):
by midnight - к полуночи
by six o'clock- к шести часам
2. что одно действие было завершено перед другим действием в прошлом:
e.g. She had already left when I came.- Когда я пришел, она уже ушла.
3. В конструкциях со словами hardly/scarcely (едва), а так же с наречием no sooner (только; как только).
e.g. He had hardly entered the room when the phone rang. Едва он вошёл в комнату, как зазвонил телефон.

11. Nick (to do) his homework by seven o'clock yesterday.
12. When I went to school yesterday, I suddenly remembered that I (to forget) to take my English exercise-book.
13. Yesterday Nick said that he (to read) much during his summer vacation.
14. Mike's friends could hardly recognize him as he (to change) greatly after his expedition to the Antarctic.
15. He (to come) home by six o'clock yesterday.
16. When I came to the station yesterday, I (to learn) that my train already (to leave).
Exercise 22. Unite the following pairs of sentences. Use the conjunctions after, as soon as, before, until, till, when.
Example: They went home. They finished their work. (after)
They went home after they had finished their work.
She tore up the letter. She read it. (as soon as)

I didn’t understand the problem. He explained. (until)

John worked as a skilled builder. He began to study architecture. (before)
Harold couldn’t leave for home. He completed everything. (till)
The river became deeper. It rained heavily. (after)
