Part V. Writing

Writing a Dental Curriculum Vitae (cv)

Your Dental CV is your advert to potential principals and therefore must be of high quality. It should be well structured, clear and concise.

Section 1 – General Info

  • Name (with titles, qualifications e.g. BDS, PhD, BSc), address, telephone number, email address, +/- photo

Section 2 – Profile

  • Describe yourself briefly, explaining what you are looking for and what you could offer potential bosses.

  • Highlight your particular strengths & qualification e.g. I have a particular interest in aesthetic dentistry in which I hold an MSc.

Section 3 – Experience

  • Include any dental experience achieved outside university clinics.

  • This can include experiences abroad during dental electives.

  • Should include what you gained & achieved in VT.

Section 4 – Education

  • Being a dental CV it is likely that your GCSE’s and AS/A2/A-levels are littered with A’s & A*’so don’t dwell on this area. Keep it brief. Feel free to include anything you feel may make you stand out in your pre-university education e.g. scholarship, prizes.

  • List your responsibilities

Section 5 – Personal Development

  • List courses you have been on and Continuing professional development (CPD) activities completed. If there are too many focus on the one you feel are important.

  • Mention any exams passed even if not all sections/exams are completed.

  • Key skills portfolio (should be completed from VT)

Section 6 – Skills & Interests

  • Other skills and interests

  • Driving license can show ability to commute.

  • Foreign language skills

Section 7 – Referees

  • If this is your first job after VT, you should use your VT trainer as your referee.

  • Include their full name, practice address and contact details.

  • If you have a successful interview then you offer will normally be subject to a check with your reference.
