Збройні Сили України

Сухопутні війська (СВ) України – найбільш численний вид Збройних Сил. Вони складають основу Збройних Сил України. СВ призначені для: відбиття ударів сухопутних угруповань агресора; утримання території, районів, рубежів; розгрому угруповань противника, що вторглись на територію держави; участі у територіальній обороні держави. СВ включають роди військ (механізовані, танкові, аеромобільні, ракетні війська і артилерію, армійську авіацію, війська ППО) і спеціальні війська (розвідувальні, спеціального призначення, інженерні, РХБ захисту, зв’язку, радіоелектронної боротьби, топографічні, гідрометеорологічні, технічного, тилового та медичного забезпечення).

Повітряні сили (ПС) – один із головних носіїв бойового потенціалу Збройних Сил України. Цей високоманевровий вид Збройних Сил призначений для виконання таких завдань: охорона повітряного простору держави, ураження з повітря об’єктів противника, авіаційна підтримки своїх військ, висадка повітряних десантів, повітряне перевезення військ і матеріальних засобів, ведення повітряної розвідки.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine

The Armed Forces of Ukraine are structurally organized into three armed services: the Land Forces, the Air Forces, and the Naval Forces.

The legal basis for the creation of the Land Forces was laid down by the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On the Land Forces of Ukraine” of

May 1996. Under the Decree the Land Forces Command was established and the organizational structure of the armed service was developed. The Land Forces were initially composed of three Operational Commands: Western Command (Lviv), Southern Command (Odesa), and Northern Command (Chernihiv).

The Land Forces are the largest component of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They are equipped with T-62, T-64, T-72, T-80 battle tanks, BTR60, BTR-70, BTR-80 armored personnel carriers, BMP-1, BMP-2, BMP-3, BMD-1, BMD-2 infantry fighting vehicles, cannons, mortars, helicopters, small arms and other weapons and systems.

The Ukrainian Air Forces was created on 17 March 1992 under the Directive of the Chief of the Main Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In 2006 the Air Force was combined with the Air Defense Forces. Currently, the Air Forces of Ukraine include five aviation branches (fighter, bomber, assault, reconnaissance, transport) and S-75, S-125, S-200, S-300 air defense missile systems as their main armament.

The mission of the Air Forces is to warn about an air or missile attack, fight the enemy air forces, and defend key administrative, political, industrial areas and centers of the country, military and civilian installations, troops and forces against air and missile attacks. Units of the Air Forces protect 7000-km long state air borders of Ukraine, monitor flights of aviation of all departments within the national air space limits and while crossing the state borders of nine neighboring states.

The creation of the Ukrainian Naval Forces began on 5 April 1992 with the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On Urgent Measures on the Construction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine”. The Naval Forces have in the inventory about 40 warships and auxiliary craft, 60 planes and helicopters. The main base of the Ukrainian Navy is Sevastopol. The mission of the Ukrainian Navy in peace time is to maintain constant combat readiness and perform combat duties for the protection of exclusive sea economic zone of Ukraine, to combat terrorism at sea, participate in joint peacekeeping operations with the Navies of other countries under the aegis of the United Nations.

Сухопутні війська Збройних Сил України (СВ) відіграють вирішальну роль у виконанні Збройними Силами України своїх функцій як у мирний, так і воєнний час.

СВ складаються з частин, з’єднань і об’єднань, які входять до оперативних командувань або підпорядковані безпосередньо Командуванню СВ. Основними родами СВ ЗСУ є механізовані і танкові війська, ракетні війська і артилерія, армійська авіація, аеромобільні війська та війська протиповітряної оборони. In recent years the British Army has been involved in a number of major operations in the world. It has helped to build a safer world in the Balkans, the Gulf, East Timor and Afghanistan. The Army is working closely with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Northern Ireland still remains an operational commitment, however, significant numbers of troops also deployed as part of the multi-national forces in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and with the UN in Cyprus. The Army also has garrison forces in Brunei, Cyprus, Germany, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. In addition the Army provides military teams and advisers in up to 25 countries around the world.

The main branches of the British Army are the Royal Armoured Corps, the Infantry, the Army Air Corps, the Royal Artillery, the Royal Engineers, and the Royal Signals.

The Royal Armoured Corps consists of Cavalry Regiments and the Royal Tank Regiment. It provides mobile firepower and has recently been equipped with the world-class Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank. It is also equipped with armoured reconnaissance vehicles, which use advanced technology to locate the enemy, or assess NBC contamination50.

Maintaining the Force

The Armed Forces of the USA have undergone frequent large-scale deployments in different areas of the world for the last several years. To be able to do that they needed a well-trained professional military force. There are several sources of procuring personnel to the force: conscription, enlistment on voluntary or contract basis and joining the military through cadet corps.

There was conscription (also called draft) in the USA during the WWII. It was temporarily revived in the USA in the early 1970s at the time of the Vietnam War. 51

The enlistment policy in the Army, as an example, is governed by Army Regulation (AR) 601–210 (Regular Army and Army Reserve Enlistment Program). This regulation prescribes eligibility criteria, policies, and procedures for enlistment and processing of persons, with or without prior service (PS), into the Regular Army (RA), Delayed Entry Program (DEP) and the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR). Besides it explains provisions for the release from Presidential Call, demobilization, and so forth. 52

Persons who apply for enlistment in the RA or the USAR must meet eligibility criteria of this regulation and any other requirements for the

Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) in which they are enlisting. Applicant is eligible for enlistment if he or she meets the following criteria:

(1) specific test requirements of MOS or option for which enlisting. (2) Must have the ability to read, write, and speak sufficient English to understand the oath of enlistment and the Entrance National Agency Check (ENTNAC) Interview. Applicant is also eligible for enlistment if he or she meets procurement physical fitness standards of AR 40-501, Chapter 2 and meets added requirements of specific option for which enlisting.

Applicants must be from 17 to 35 years old, American citizens or registered aliens, and in good health and physical condition. To determine what careers they are best suited for, all applicants must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The ASVAB is offered at most high schools and at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS). Although the ASVAB has ten different subjects, it's the math and the verbal

portion that determines whether or not the applicant passes the test. The other sections are designed to discover aptitudes for different jobs.

Today recruiting to the services is carried out mainly through recruiting offices but also through cadet corps.

Recruiting campaigns and publicity now emphasize the versatility and variety of professions and trades offered in the armed forces, rather than stressing a ‘macho’ image for the Army or luring volunteer to the Navy with the promise to travel to exotic places.

Enlistment in the RA is authorized for a term of at least 2 but not more than 6 years. A specific MOS may require a minimum term of service. Those applicants scoring 0-39 on the English Comprehension Level Test (ECLT) will be enlisted for 4 years regardless of MOS for which enlisting. Enlistment in the USAR will be for a period of 8 years.

Enlistment programs and options vary from time to time. Local Army recruiters always have the latest information and are ready to answer inquiries without obligation.
