The noun

1. Существительное и его определители:

Существительное (или группу существительного) можно распознать в предложении по определителю, который (если имеется), стоит непосредственно перед существительным или в начале группы существительного.

Определителями являются:

- артикли (определенный и неопределенный);

- местоимения: притяжательные (my, your, his, her, its, our, their), указательные (this, these, that, those, such), неопределенные (some, any, no, every);

- существительные в притяжательной форме;

- числительные;

- наречия типа much, many, few, little.

Надо помнить, что перед существительным может быть только один определитель и несколько определений, которые могут выражаться разными частями речи:

3.Существительное в роли определителя: правило ряда

В роли определения существительное может быть с предлогом (после определяемого слова: thebookofinterest– книга, представляющая интерес), и без предлога (перед определяемым словом:asimulationtechnique– метод моделирования).

Существительных в роли определения к другому («главному») существительному может быть несколько. Поэтому при переводе следует помнить «Правило ряда»:если после артикля или другого определителя стоит ряд слов, чаще всего существительных в единственном числе и без предлога (предлог обычно прерывает ряд!), то толькопоследнее из них будет тем словом, к которому относится артикль и с которого надо начинать перевод этого ряда, мысленно ставя после него вопроскакой?Все остальные слова являются его определениями:

Следует помнить, что часто внутри самого ряда встречаются существительные, определяющие одно из слов этого ряда, а не последнее существительное:

Theyhaveusedtheconventional crystal growthmethod. – Они использовалиобычный методвыращивания кристаллов.

Часто ряд состоит из 3 слов, среднее из которых может быть прилагательным, причастиями или герундием. Перевод такого ряда следует начинать с последнего слова, продолжать в строго обратном порядке, соблюдая грамматическую форму среднего слова при переводе:

Если в ряду первым стоит прилагательное, то оно обычно относится к последнему слову, однако иногда оно может определять и следующее за ним существительное:

Союзы andилиorобычно не прерывают ряда:
