brussels ‘names and shames’

By Daniel Dombey in Brussels

Europe’s network airlines are unfairly charging internet customers different prices in different countries for the same tickets, the European Commission alleged yesterday.

* * *

In an attempt .at "naming and shaming", the Brussels body wrote to 18 European airlines yesterday to ask if they charged different fares to customers in different European states – and called on them to justify any such practices.

The commissioner said, however, the "basis for disciplinary action is not very clear.

He also acknowledged that prices could vary for "objective" reasons, such as booking time, flexibility, and the starting point of the journey.

Zimbabwe faces sanctions as european union commission loses patience over human rights

By Stephen Castle in Brussels

ZIMBABWE FACED the near certainty of EU sanctions yesterday after failing to give assurances on press freedom, or to say how international observers will be able to monitor the presidential elections.

A letter from the Zimbabwean government was dismissed by diplomats as vague and insubstantial, raising the prospect that European foreign ministers will impose targeted sanctions – such as visa bans and a freeze on overseas assets – on senior government figures next Monday.

Zimbabwe was given a last chance to avoid confrontation during 10 days’ talks in Brussels.

There was also an attack from Zimbabwe on EU countries, including Britain, which Zimbabwe said has "funded opposition parties" in what it described as "blatant interference in the internal affairs of Zimbabwe".

The most prominent is the speaker of parliament, a wealthy businessman whose children were educated in America and Britain.

Air Marshal Perence Shiri, commander of the air force, is also on the list. He lead "the brutal repression of people when thousand of civilians were killed"

The days when he was welcomed at the Farnborough Air Show are over.

Stan Mudenge, the foreign minister who addressed ministers in Brussels last month, is now barred from Europe.

Eu Warns Belarus

• BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters) – Belarus could lose European Union trade privileges worth more than 100 million euros if the bloc finds the country is violating workers rights, the European Commission said this week.

The EU executive said in a statement Wednesday it was investigating the country for repressing trade unions.

"We are deeply concerned about developments in Belarus," EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said in a statement.

EU imports from Belarus are worth 850 million euros ($1.08 billion), of which 190 million euros come under the scheme.

The move comes after the arrest of independent labor officials there and complaints of harassment from workers organizations. There was no immediate comment from authorities in Belarus.
