Text:The Development of Railway of Ukraine

1.Read and translate the text

There were two reasons to build the railways in Ukraine: favourable geographical location and rich deposites of mineral resources.

The start of construction of Railway in Ukraine began at 60-s of XIX century. At that time it was necessary to connect the port of Odessa and south-western borders of Russia and central regions.

The first railways in Ukraine became Odessa - Balta (1865) to the south and Peremyshl - Lviv (1861) on the west. Already in 1868 there were built many railways. The length of Odessa – Balta (1861-1865) railway was 213 km .It was Baron Ungern –Sternberg who initiated the building of the first railway. Ukraine rail network is mainly formed by the end of XIX century.

Most intensive railway directions were in Donbass and in the West of Ukraine. The most important railways of Ukraine: Kyiv - Kozyatin - Lviv, Kozyatin - Zhmerinka - Odessa, Kyiv - Konotop - Shostka, Kyiv - Poltava - Kharkiv - Debaltseve, Krivoy Rog - Dnipropetrovsk - Donetsk, Kharkiv - Dnepropetrovsk - Kiev - Simferopol - Sevastopol, Lviv - Mukachevo - Chop and others.

Major junctions with the developed station management are Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Fast, Debaltsevo and others. The main goods transported due to the railway are building materials, coal and ores, especially iron, agricultural products, machines, tools, chemical goods etc. The Railway Transport of Ukraine subordinated to the State Administration of Railway Transport of Ukraine. Major problem for Ukraine in its integration into the single European rail system is narrowing the width of the Ukrainian railway (1524 mm) to the European standard (1435 mm) as in neighboring Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Now on the border with these states are complex systems of transfer of rolling stock trains from track to track, which significantly reduces the efficiency of railway transport, in particular in time.
