  1. Read and translate the text: red noses fight poverty

Take a minute and ask yourself: What do charity (1) and comedy have in common(2)?

Nothing? Well, Comic Relief will certainly disagree(3) with you.

Set up(4) by a group of comedians, Comic Relief is a charity that uses laughter (5)to raise(6) money from the general public(7) and help fight poverty (8)in the UK and Africa. It began with a few live(9) comedy events that were broadcast(10) on BBC 1 on Christmas Day 1985, in response to the famine(11) in Ethiopia. Since then, they have managed to raise about £300 million!

Comic Relief is best known as the organisation behind Red Nose Day, the biggest fundraising(12) event in the UK. On Red Nose Day, held every two years, people throughout (13)Britain put on a red plastic nose and do the craziest things they can think of - all to raise money for those in need(14). Eating jelly with chopsticks(15), cutting the grass with a pair of scissors and eating grapes while wearing boxing gloves are just a few of the things people have done. The event includes moving documentary films and extraordinary comedy by some of the best British comedians, broadcast on national TV.

Over the years, many celebrities(16) have taken part, each in their own special way. 'Mr Bean', Robbie Williams, and Victoria and David Beckham are only some of the famous people who have offered(17) their time and talent(18) in an event that unites(19) the whole nation in trying to help other people and have fun at the same time!
