VI. E. A) Read the text Swedish Company and b) answer the questions
a) Mr Carlson, a Swedish businessman, comes to Britain on business. He is going to buy some equipment for a new plant that his company is going to build. His business activities include a number of business appointments, business lunches, consultations with bankers about a possible loan for the construction, etc. There will be a reception at Anglo-Swedish Trade Association, too.
If his company builds a new plant, they will survive the competition. If they don’t expand their business, they will lose it to the competitors.
They will set up a new plant if they raise enough capital. They will start work next May if there are no unexpected difficulties. If everything goes to plan, they will first build a small town. If they have a completely automated plant operating a three-shift system, they will survive and make profit. If they weigh all “pros” and “cons”, they will make a good decision.
b) 1. What’s the purpose of his visit to Britain? 2. What do his business activities include? 3. Under what conditions will they survive and make profit?

VII. B. Read the text Washington, D.C. (from Easy English № 92)
Washington, D.C., (D.C. stands for the District of Columbia) is the capital of the United States of America. It lies on the Potomac River between the states of Maryland and Virginia. It was chosen as the capital in 1790, and the headquarters of the president and Congress moved there a few years later.
Today it is a major cultural centre, home to seven universities, including Georgetown University and Howard University, as well as important national monuments like the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and the Lincoln Memorial. Of course, Washington, D.C.’s most famous buildings are the White House, which dates back to the end of the 18th century and the official residence of the U.S. president, and the Capitol – the American Congress building.
If you are going to visit Washington, D.C., its best to go there in July because of the 4th of July’s Independence Day Parade. The parade takes place in late morning along Constitution Avenue and attracts thousands of spectators, who come to see specially invited bands, military units and VIPs. Independence Day is a holiday for all Americans, and the bands are specially selected on the basis of quality and ethnic and cultural diversity. In the evening everyone goes to watch the fireworks near the Capitol – one of the country’s largest firework displays.

VII. C. Read the text Ottawa and then discuss it (from Easy English № 47)
Ottawa, the capital of Canada, lies on the Ottawa river, which marks the border between the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. Ottawa is the governmental and cultural centre of Canada. Its main points of interest are Parliament Hill with its changing of the guard, National Library and Supreme Court buildings. Ottawa is a bi-cultural city, with newspapers and TV channels in both English and French. 28% of the population speak both languages, 67% only speak English and the remainder only French or another language altogether.
One of the tibes that lived in the present are of the city was the Ottawa tribe. In fact the city’s name comes from the Indian word adawe, which means “to trade”.
One of the greatest Ottawa warriors was Pontiac, who in the middle of the 18th century established a big Indian confederacy, which courageously resisted the English settlers. Pontiac’s battles lasted three years and were proof that the Native Americans were ready to fight for their land. He had to give up, however, when he ran out of ammunition and the expected French help did not come. Today, he is viewed as the most courageous Indian leader and one of the most important in the history of Indian resistance.
VII. D. Read the text Belfast and discuss it (from Easy English № 25)
Belfast is the capital and the main citiy of Northern Ireland. It is also a large port, where the shipbuilding industry has been growing for many years.
In the 17th century Belfast was only a small town, lying between a range of high hills, the sea and a river valley. Two centuries later it was a major centre of the industrial revolution. The development of shipbuilding was the main reason for the growth of the city. Today Belfast is the largest citiy in Northern Ireland with half a million inhabitants.
Belfast has lots of museums, galleries and, of course, Irish pubs, which are a must while visiting the city. There are even special Pub Walking Tours for those who want to have a beer in the best pubs in Belfast. So if you ever go to Ireland, remember to visit Belfast – the great city in a beautiful country.
