26. The Gerundial. Герундиальный оборот

В герундиальном обороте перед герундием всегда стоит существительное в притяжательном или общем падеже, или место-имение в притяжательном падеже, которое и является субъектом действия или состояния, выраженного герундием.
Герундиальные обороты переводятся на русский язык придаточным предложением с союзами что (чтобы) с пред-шествующим ему место-имением то, тем что, как.
His having been arrested was unexpected for us.
We insisted on the telegram not being sent .
We don’t mind his (Peter) taking part in this experiment. (or: We don’t mind Peter’s taking part in this experiment).
То, что его арестовали, было неожиданным для нас.
Мы настаивали на том, чтобы телеграмму не отправляли.
Мы не против того, чтобы он (Петр) принял участие в этом эксперименте.
27. The Infinitive. Инфинитив

Инфинитив, являясь неличной формой глагола, имеет свойства как существительного, так и глагола. Обладая признаками глагола, он имеет категорию залога, относительного времени, может иметь дополнение и определяться наречием.

Обладая именными свойствами, инфинитив может выполнять синтаксические функции существительного, прилагательного и наречия.

To read English books in the original is very pleasant. or: It is very pleasant to read English books in the original. My aim is to graduate from university. You must go to this lecture. They continued to wait for him. I like to read Byron’s poems. To know English well one must learn many words.
He stopped to smoke. The text to be translated is rather difficult.
Приятно читать английские книги в оригинале. Моя цель – закончить университет. Ты должен идти на эту лекцию.
Они продолжали ждать его. Мне нравится читать поэмы Байрона.
Чтобы хорошо знать английский язык, надо выучить много слов.
Он остановился, чтобы закурить. Текст, который нужно перевести, довольно трудный.
28. The Infinitive Constructions. Инфинитивные обороты

1.Objective Infinitive Construction ( Complex Object)
Объектный инфинитивный оборот представляет собой сочетание местоимения в объектном падеже или существительного в общем падеже с инфинитивом.
Употребляется после глаголов: 1) to want, to with, should (would) like
I want them to help me. I’d like him to come in time.
Я хочу, чтобы они помогли мне. Я хотела бы, чтобы он пришел вовремя.
2) после глаголов: feel, hear, see, watch, notice c инфинитивом без частицы to.
I have never heard her play the piano.
Я никогда не слышал, как она играет на пианино.
3) после глаголов suppose, (полагать, предполагать), think, consider, understand, know
I suppose her to take part in the concert.
Я полагаю, что она примет участие в концерте.
4) после глаголов let, make (заставлять) без “to”, order (приказывать), ask (просить).
He asked me to come.
Он просил меня придти.
2. Subjective Infinitive Construction (Complex Subject) представляет собой сочетание существительного в общем падеже или личного местоимения в именительном падеже с инфинитивом.
Употребляется после глаголов know, say, report, expect, believe, suppose, consider, think и др., стоящих в форме страда-тельного залога.
После глаголов: seem, (казаться), happen (случаться), prove, turn out, appear (оказываться) в форме действи-тельного залога.
С глагольными сочетаниями be likely, be sure, be certain
He is said to know several foreign languages. The book is known to have been translated into many languages. She doesn’t seem to know the subject. Do you happen to know where he lives. The children seem to be sleeping. The weather is likely to change.
Говорят, что он знает несколько иностранных языков.
Известно, что эта книга переведена на многие языки. Кажется, она не знает этого предмета.
Вы случайно не знаете, где он живет? Дети, кажется, спят. Погода, вероятно, изменится.
3. Инфинитивный оборот с предлогом for
Данный оборот представляет собой сочетание предлога for + существительное в общем падеже или местоимение в объектном падеже с инфинитивом и может выступать а предложении в функции различных членов.
It is for you to decide what to do. We waited for the library to open.
Вам решать, что делать. Мы ждали, когда откроется библиотека.
