Ex. 6. Role-play the following situations:

  1. Introduce your chief to your wife (husband), colleague;

  2. Greet your colleague. Ask him (her) how he (she) feels;

  3. Have a talk about your friend's relatives and send them regards.

Ex.7. Read the dialogue and speak about your studies at the University

using the vocabulary notes below:

Taras: Hello, Oleh. I haven't seen you for ages. What's your life? Where do you study?

Oleh: Nice to see you, Taras. I'm well, thank you. Now I study at the Kyiv National University of Internal Affairs.

Taras: Really? You are lucky. And I'm going to enter this University. Will you tell me something?

Oleh: The University trains specialists for all branches of law enforcement activities. There are several training and research institutes, departments, centres and laboratories in the University. Among them there are the Operational Staff of Militia Training Institute, the Investigators and Forensic Experts Training Institute, the Law Faculty, the Correspondent and Distant Training Institute, (the Juridical Lyceum and some others).

Taras: What specialists are trained at the institutes?

Oleh: The Operational Staff of Militia Training Institute trains specialists for units of criminal militia, specialists on combating organized and economic crime, Forensic Experts Training Institute trains forensic experts and investigators, the Correspondence and Distant Training Institute is correspondence department, the Law Faculty trains lawyers.

Taras: When did you enter the University? What year are you in?

Oleh: I entered the University last year. I'm a first-year student.

Taras: How many years does the course of studies last?

Oleh: The course of studies lasts 4 years for students with higher education and 5 years for those who finished secondary school.

Taras: Are you a full-time student?

Oleg: No, I am not. I am a correspondence student.

Taras: What skills and abilities are students taught?

Oleh: For our future work it is necessary to learn to drive a car, to handle a weapon and use special methods of self-defence, to interview witnesses, to interrogate criminals, to examine a crime scene, to search for and collect evidence, to locate and apprehend a suspect, to establish corpus delicti and so on.

Taras: What special subjects do you learn?

Oleh: We learn Administrative Law, Theory of State and Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, Detective Activity, Special Tactics and others.

Taras: An officer of militia is to be competent not only in his special field but also in such fields as human behaviour, human psychology and human understanding. As far as I know in some cases it is impossible to prevent or solve crimes without all that.

Oleh: You are right. That's why an essential part of the curriculum of our educational establishment includes the following subjects: Crime Psychology, Ethics, Criminology etc.

Taras: What social and humanitarian subjects do you learn?

Oleg: We learn History of Ukraine, Economy, Philosophy, Ukrainian Business Language, Computer Science, foreign languages and others.

Taras: Do you have exams twice an academic year?

Oleh: Yes, we do. During examination sessions we have many lectures and seminars.

Taras: Do you pay for your study?

Oleh: My study is free of charge because I serve in the Militia forces. I work at the Criminal Investigation Department and deal with crime prevention and solution of crimes.
