1. Read the following dialogues.

Terri:Hey, let’s eat out tonight.

Fred: What’s the occasion? You won the lottery?

Terri:No, just want to relax a little bit. You don't have to win the lottery to relax, do you?

Fred: Well, I’m kind of broke.

Terri: Don’t be silly. I’ll take you anywhere you want to go.

Fred:Really? It’s very nice of you.

Terri:Wonderful! You know what? I wish you wanted to relax everyday.

Fred:Dream on!

*****

Cashier:Hi. May I help you?

Paul Young: Yes. What’s the buying rate for euro?

Cashier:1.15 U.S. dollars to the euro.

Paul Young: Okay. I’d like to change some euro into US dollars, please.

Cashier:Sure. How much would you like to change?

Paul Young: Six hundred euro.

Cashier:Very good. May I see your passport?

Paul Young: Here you are.

Cashier:How would you like your bills?

Paul Young:In fifties, please.

*****

A:I am out of cash. I have only dollars.

B:We’ll go to the exchange office. May I look at American money? Dollars are quite different from the Britain’s currency.

A:Dollars are green so are sometimes called greenbacks. On the front, each has the picture of famous American. The dollar bill, for instance, shows the first US president.

B:The Britain’s currency is the pound sterling. Paper notes have the Queen’s head on one side and a famous person, for example Charles Dickens, on the other.

A:The US dollar is made of 100 cents. And tell me, please, about a pound.

B:A pound consists of 100 pence. Pound coins are round and gold colored. They have the Queen’s head on one side and one of the designs, English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish on the other.

A:But we have such types of coins in the USA: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters. There are also half-dollar and silver-dollars. Pennies have a dark brown color; all the other coins have a silver appearance.

B:I know that an informal name for dollars is bucks. Why do the Americans use this name for the money?

A:In the early period of US history people traded the skins of bucks (deer) and prices would sometimes be given as a number of buckskins.

B:So let’s change your bucks.
