“The First Roman Roads”

The earliest highways in Great Britain were those laid down by the Romans during their occupation of the country from A.D. 43 until the early fifth century. The Romans had constructed a network of roads covering Europe, North Africa and part of Asia. These roads were constructor for military purposes in order to Improve communications between the various camps. The majority radiated from the administrative centre of Londinium (London) in the south-east to the various provincial centers and there to the Welsh and Scottish borders.

“The Construction of the First Roman Roads”

The Roman roads were generally noted for their straight lines and their complete disregard of the natural contours of the countryside. The roads were constructed to accommodate bodies of men marching on foot but also to allow for the transporting of equipment heavy baggage wagons.

The roads were usually built of cemented stone layers set en a rubble foundation and surfaced with mortar-bound gravel or Joined stone stabs to an overall thickness of approximately 3ft, but with the actual width of the

surfacing rarely exceeding 14 ft.
